Naval Jelly and GunKote, will it leave a good enough finish?
I have a Old Dragoon 1927 Mosin that needs refinishing and I don't want to make a big trip to the blasting cabinet, I have to sneak it into work to do it and it's a big risk, but anyways. Will naval jelly give me a good enough finish to take off the rust and old Helga nail polish finish on the rifle so I can Gunkote it? I know GK it really picky on it's prep and I still might have to go with the blaster but I wanted some opinions and if anyone has used it before. I've used Aluma Hyde II before, great stuff for gun bodies but not for internal parts. I did another Mosin in it and it turned out great.

The naval jelly will definitely clean all rust off to the bare metal. But something should be done immediately afterwards to protect it from rusting again. It seems to speed up the process of rusting once it has been used to take the rust off.

Naval jelly will strip the finish without difficulty, but I would recommend a 600 grit or so sanding to smooth up the metal, then a bath in acetone to finish prep.
Good luck.
