What is this .THM file that shows up when I take videos on my camera?

Whenever I take a video on my camera (Sony Digital Still Camera DSC-W30), it creates an mpeg file and a .THM file.

I can't open the .THM file with any program on my computer. It doesn't take up much space but I've been deleting them all along. What is this file for and why does it always show up?

Update:

But the .THM file doesn't have an image! On the other hand, the mpeg file has the preview image.

Small, icon-sized image that represents a larger image; commonly used on the Web and in clip art galleries; may be created by various photo or video editing programs; also produced by some digital cameras as small sample images of photos captured by the camera.

THuMbnail. It's a nice feature to have. It should open with whatever opens jpgs on your computer.

It's a preview picture for your computer to display to make it easier to find a particular shot to open.

Source(s): There will be a preview image of the movie file only after playing the movie itself. Even on my mac it takes a while to generate a preview. Since you use a PC, you might try opening the file with the Windows Media Player and see if it will create an icon to go with the .thm Windows handling of icon files is flaky, too. You could click the file once and wait. That might generate a preview icon. When I import my Canon Powershot pix using Canon's software, it makes the icon files automatically. If I take the sd card out and just copy file over, I have to open the files before OSX will make the preview icons. Otherwise get Irfanview and open the files with it. Irfanview should generate the necessary icon. You could also try playing back the movie on the camera itself before transferring it to your computer.
