The greatest common factor is the largest term by which both of the given terms are divisible. For example, the GCF of 6 and 9 is 3, since 3 is the largest number by which BOTH 6 AND 9 are divisible. For A, both terms have coefficients that are prime numbers (11 is divisible only by 1 and 11; 17 is divisible only by 1 and 17), so the GCF is simply f. Dividing both terms by f gives -11f^7 and 17. Neither of these terms has a common factor (since 11 and 17 are prime numbers, and the second term now contains no variables).
For b, the bottom term contains no variables, so the GCF will be an integer (whole number). 6 and 3 are both divisible by 3. Dividing both terms by 3 gives 2q^4 and -1. These terms do not have a common factor, so that verifies that 3 was the GCF.
