I am a Pagan and I'm looking for community. Someone told me to try the UU church...?

One problem, I am terrified of the concept of "Church." I can't pin it down, but the very idea of committing to something called "Church" sends ice through my veins. I need serious help, I know. Also, I know of no one who will come with me and hold my hand though all of this. I'm pretty certain it's the people inside the building I'm afraid of and not the building itself. Apparently I've got a nasty social anxiety thing going on. Just help with overcoming the fear. I don't need an online conversion. Thanks.

Although I never joined a UU church if there was one close to me that had a CUUPs (the Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans) I would seriously consider it. A friend of mine, we circled together, was a member of CUUPS and I went to their Yule celebration one year. It was very nice.

You can also check out http://www.witchvox.com/ for like minded people, groups, stores, and events in your general area. If you know of any metaphysical stores you should see if they sponsor any events.

I know what you mean. When I was first told about the UU Church, I completely rejected that idea as "church" usually means a preacher yelling at you, throwing verses around and at people, sentencing anyone who isn't sitting there in the church with them to hell, etc... But the UU "church" really is totally different. They do have sermons, but they are normally general sermons. The one I attend reads from the Dali Llama, philosophers, the Bible (yes, even the Bible has some good stuff in it - they just don't get into the whole "YOU MUST BELIEVE!" because honestly, most of us don't). You'll find that a lot of UU churches are mostly Pagan with agnostic and atheists as well. The Christians that do attend are nominal Christians - they have their belief, but they are more about sharing in a community than trying to convert people. They don't ask you to stand up or talk in front of others, unless that is what you want. It's a very casual thing and more Pagan than anything. =)

I actually agree that you need to get over the problem with the word church. It means nothing more than body, seriously...it's not a building, it's just people with a common cause.

Social anxiety isn't something anyone is going to be able to help you with online. You can go to http://www.cuups.org/ and http://www.witchvox.com/ and contact people through the networking pages to see if there is someone near you who will go in with you and do the handholding, but I'd really seek professional care for the social anxiety thing...seriously. Work on the big problem FIRST.

There is really no need to suffer when there are good treatments for anxiety disorders.

UU church wasn't for me either.... yes some of them have little groups of pagans inside but it always felt like second class to me and the fellowship felt forced at best. Also still too many rules. No, I prefer a nice small sized coven less than 10 people so you can have good deep and meaningful fellowship with them. Try using www.witchvox.org to see if you can find a coven near you.
