1997 Ford T-Bird LX went to change trans filter found magnet approximately 1 3/4" in diameter stuck to the pan?
I also found small pieces of metal attached to the magnet I need to find out where the magnet might have came from.

the magnet is there on purpose to catch any metal chips that would circulate through the fluid and ruin your tranny

The magnet belongs in the pan, it is there to pick up metal shavings to keep them from going through the transmission. some small (very small) pieces are normal due to wear. Don't worry about it unless your transmission is acting up.
