When vegetable food was short, people had to take animal food. We have canine teeth like carnivores and basically lived by hunting animals in pre civilisation era!

You know in high altitude or hostile climates there wont be much vegetation for consumption. So they may have to depend on other animals. It is true that killing animals that also feel pain, share love and serve us in some or other way, is not pleasing or give a feel good sense, for many.

But in the west, they do not consider animals as having souls like Indians do. in fact, their religion says the Lord placed all the wealth of the world for use of humans, etc! So leave religion and soul, but purely on grounds of compassion many westerners do not like to kill or eat animal flesh.

Desiboy questioned about the hunting of animals by royals and even legendary heroes like Ram! Yes, kings used to hunt for sport and also to keep the population of wild species under check, so that they may not enter nearby villages and harm the pet animals or humans.

There are people who argue that the pressure for vegetable food would hike if everyone depended only on plants. Because the animal food is a concentrate and can reduce the need for vegetable supplements according to some experts. In view of the reducing land area for agriculture and increasing demands for food, there are people who say that the intake of animal food / fisheries etc would have to be increased either for direct consumption or as preserved food!

In modern age, where challenges of survival are many, from land and water to food and nutrition, there may not be much scope for adhering traditional values in a big way. I may say with much regret that many children of traditionally veg families start taking NV once they enter college hostels or company of NV pals!

If there is no supply of sufficient veg food, it may not be sin to take animal food. But even plants have feelings like pain (disputed by people since they have no nervous system or brain and simple response to stimuli is not ''feeling'' like animals do, they argue), which they expressed, according to early scientist Jagdish Chandra Bose - however it met with much resistance and downplayed by scientific community then (see link given below). But his other contributions were welcomed and Bose was honoured both in India and outside for his contributions to science. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society on May 13, 1920, becoming the first Indian to be honoured by the Royal Society in the field of Science.

In the "Autobiography of a Yogi", Swami Yogananda, the author, mentions about the famous botanist Luther Burbank whom he met in the US. The botanist and spiritualist had a big garden and produced 'spineless' roses, by ''suggesting'' that they need not have the defensive spines and they were safe etc. Sending love waves to infuse salutary responses in plants etc have been mentioned in many spiritual and a few freak scientific literature too, but I could not find the least reference to this info in the weblinks on Burbank!

So the scientific and modern publishing community are careful about not mixing spiritual content to scientific info!

Apart from this curiosity, we may not be able to stop non veg among humans for many reasons, including the habitual, situational, traditional and economic reasons.

In many societies, controversy and debate have arisen over the ethics of eating animals. Ethical objections are generally divided into opposition to the act of killing in general, and opposition to certain agricultural practices surrounding the production of meat. Reasons for objecting to the practice of killing animals for consumption may include animal rights, environmental ethics, or religious reasons. Some people, while not vegetarians, refuse to eat the flesh of certain animals due to cultural taboo, such as cats, dogs, horses, or rabbits. Others vocally support meat eating for scientific, nutritional and cultural reasons, including religious ones. Some meat eaters abstain from the meat of animals reared in particular ways, such as factory farms, or avoid certain meats, such as veal or foie gras. Some people follow vegetarian or vegan diets not because of moral concerns involving the production of meat and other animal products in general, but the treatment involving the raising and slaughter of animals. About 60% of ethics professors consider the consumption of meat from mammals "morally bad"

The animals we eat are livestock. They are a little different then dogs and cats. When time is spent around livestock, they just don't have the same mental capacity. Their bodies are also built exactly for what happens to them. They are born tiny, and are all grown and ready to be eaten, depending on the animal, 4 months to a year later. They also marble which means their fat is swirled in with the muscle for maximum taste. They also contain vital nutrients such as iron for survival. It is not wrong to be a vegetarian, but these animals are specifically designed to be livestock, to be eaten

Do you think trees and grass don't have a soul. They too grow. As per " Thiruvasagam " the man has births like single cell, vegetation, then sense developing animals from 1 to 6. Please note he is not eating tiger or lion mostly vegetarian animals. From his teeth construction he is a natural hunter.

I am not supporting N.V. Some has elevated themselves to higher standard of life and modified their food habit accordingly. Others are coming. please wait.

For somebody who doesn't speak english as his native tongue, this is a pretty decent attempt.

Why do we, as humans eat animals even though they have souls too? The answer is pretty simple. For anything living to continue to remain alive, it has to eat other living things. As animals eat plants, and as other animals eat each other, everything must eat something which was living at one stage or another.

It will be a good debate whether animal killing is ethical or not. Some people hunt animal for passion not for food. In Ramayana, Lord Ram went in search for a golden Deer for hunting falls into the wicked trap layed by Ravan. So as the God himslef used to kill animals, it is really confusing for me whether its ethical or not.

you are having thought as me , i too don't like that , not because of vegetarian rather i too treat every body equal whether it is human or animals each one has soul also same sense organs like us ,it is practiced from ancient times by stone age people which until humans are killing them for food . it cant be stoppable because people are tasted that for years . it is only possible when people realizing that is wrong ..
