Potty training a puppy in only 7 days? Is that possible?

I have heard countless times that owners have (online and in person) potty trained their dogs in just a week. Is that possible? My dog, a female Pomeranian, took at least 11 months to potty train since the day we brought her home as a puppy! What am I missing here? Is it possible to have a puppy potty trained in a week? What are the methods these people are using?!

PS- no, my dog does not have a medical problem so that's not why she took so long! Also please no rude answers!

YES!! Entirely possible, but not common. I had a Shiba who was housebroken in a day. LITERALLY. The breed's known for their escape skills. She got out of her crate the first night, went to the bathroom on the floor RIGHT before we woke up (it was still warm). I cleaned it up, took her outside. She went and I praised her/gave her a treat. Later that day, she went in the house. I clapped my hands to stop her mid-pee along with a firm "NO!" and took her outside. She finished, I praised and treated her and that was that.

My Boxer took about two weeks and still had an occasional accident.

My mom's yorkie/maltese took a couple of months.

A Pomeranian, like my mom's dog, is a small breed. The smaller the breed, the smaller the bladder, the shorter period of time they can hold it. They have more accidents more frequently. Most new owners don't know how to properly potty train their dog. This is my method:

    http://sitstayspeak.wordpress.com/2010/07/27/crati...

The main thing is using a crate, praising good behavior, keeping a constant watch on the dog while out of the crate, and stopping unwanted behavior. Dogs are smart and learn quickly. When I was a kid, I remember my mom's ex beating out husky when he went in the house and rubbing his nose in it. All this teaches a dog is that if they go to the bathroom, they might end up hurt. It doesn't teach them what is wanted and unwanted.

What method did YOU use? When ever somebody talks about housebreaking taking a long time, I always wonder what methods they're using... I can't imagine it's the same as mine haha.

It is definitely possible, but it depends on the method of training and the individual dog. Some just get faster than others. It is not uncommon though for potty training to take a while. My previous dog, a Yorkie, was potty trained in 1 week and did not have a single accident until 1 year later when he was on pain medication after having surgery, so I'm sure that wasn't really his fault. My Havanese I have now took about 11 months before he completely stopped having accidents. He had/has no medical problems either. Funny because he is really smart and can learn new tricks in only a few days. The same method was used in both cases.

The dog is peeing in the house when the owner is not looking.

A puppy that is only a few months old will not be 100% ttrustworthy with potty training in 1 week. They might have a really good idea of what you want but accidents will still happen.

At least, that's been my experience.

I guess it would be possible, but I think it's like children. When my boys were little, a lot of people I knew bragged that their kids were potty trained at some early age. Big deal. Who cares? The dogs get house broken eventually, just like the boys were potty trained before they started school,so why does it matter how long it took? My first boxer took a long time, but so what? The point in having a dog is to enjoy them and they enjoy us. I won't get hung up on how fast my puppy learned to do whatever.

I have personally purchased and used the book, How to Housebreak Your Dog in Seven Days, written by Shirlee Kalstone. It describes an effective and easy, punishment-free way to housebreak a young puppy using a crate, plus a good understanding of canine behavior (and more). Puppies do not begin to develop physical control until they are about 4 months old BUT they can very easily learn the idea of going outside (or wherever you want them to go) within a short time. Then it is your responsibility to follow the (easy) guidelines and rules in the book, including keeping a sharp eye on the puppy and feeding it on a strictly adhered to schedule.

I admit to being very skeptical when I first purchased the book. I only bought it originally because I was curious about the then-new (to me) idea of crate training. Then I tried it on my next puppy. I found that the book made a lot of sense and worked just the way Ms Kalstone said it would, as long as I did MY part. The only time my puppy had an "accident" was when *I* slipped up. I'd owned dogs and housebroken puppies for decades before I bought this book, and I didn't think that I needed to learn anything or that there was anything new to learn OR that it would work. Wrong on all counts!

I now heartily recommend the book to others.

A lot of people try to crate train their puppies but do not have all of the information they need to do it right. Then they end up with stained carpets and stinky crates. This book tells you everything you need to know; what to do,when to do it and how to do it. It's low-priced (under $10) and easy to find, at Dogwise (www.dogwise.com). I think it is best to completely read the book before you get a puppy and then read it again after you get a puppy (while it is sleeping) and refer back to the sections you need to review as you go along.

Human beings are said to only retain 20% of what we learn, so anyone who hasn't housebroken a puppy in a while could probably stand a refresher course and this book is a very good one.

I am not Ms Kalstone, I didn't write the book, I have no connection to Dogwise except that I like to buy books there (good, big selection) and whether you buy the book or not is entirely up to you.

Yes it is possible but unlikely. I find it is really unrealistic especially in a toy breed who have such little bladders, but it can happen. it is more typical however for a dog to be potty trained in a few months rather than a few days. Anybody or product that promises "quick" fixes are most likely scams because every dog is different and learn different things at different paces. Some dogs learn to walk loosely on leash quickly while not potty proofed yet, while others can be totally potty proofed but the worst loose leash walker.
