how can i solve this arithmetic problem?

if the 8th term is 23 and the 12th term is -1, what is the first term?

    8x + c = 23 --- (1)

    12x + c = -1 --- (2)

    subtract (1) from (2)

    12x + c = -1

    - ( 8 x + c = 23)

    --------------------------

    4x = -24 ==> x = -6

    Now

    8x + c = 23

    also x = -6

    so c= 23+48 = 71

    1st term is x+c = -6 + 71 = 65 (Answer)
