I just got finished watching that Documentary from a few years back called sicko about how if you dont have money for insurance in usa your fuked, Im in Ireland here and on the insurance im on I can get free pretty much everything free for small monthly fee to insurance company, Its just the norm, not everyone here is in that boat, alot of people struggle everywhere but I was wondering are things in united states as ruthless as that documentary made out, It showed one man who didnt have cover and hospital refused to soe his fingers back on, because i have had people say to me if you dont have money there and you get sick there is no where to turn,
I was thinking to my self there may have been exaggeration for marketing purpose like most documentaries this is why i wrote this question i was interested to see the responce

~~I know for a fact it was all correct. Sadly enough people who do not have insurance can not access medical care if they cant afford it, unless it is a life threatening emergency. Then a hospital will treat them, but they still get the bill (this is why 75% of BK is due to medical care).
Private hospitals DO NOT have to take a patient unless it's life threatening, then they stabilize the patient and send them to a county hospital. The have no option for routine medical care unless they can afford to pay cash. In county hospitals a person gets in line with people with strep throat, severe flu, etc. and sit and wait (8 hours is the average) for treatment.
I see people all the time stating that hospitals HAVE to see patients. It is very untrue. I worked in a hospital and we had to turn a man away who had been grazed in the arm from a bullet because it was not life threatening, so he was sent to county. County still bills these people, sometimes though they will discount for low income people. I could tell you many other stories of what was turned away but you get the idea.
I don't call emergency room care a "healthy" health care system. We have an atrocious health care system here. Thankfully we do have a health care reform that will go into full effect in 2014. Until then it's a mess, and a very sad situation for a civilized country. It isn't the best reform, but at least we finally have something to build on.
Sicko was very accurate at portraying our health care system. People who have not worked in it, simple do not understand the reality of it. I have been in medical for 14 years.~~

Sicko is a movie and they took a couple of stories and exaggerated them. We also don't have a guy here who wears a blue suit and a red cape that flies. Anyone that goes to a hospital cannot be turned away. It's the law and it's been that way for a while. Meanwhile the guy that made the movie is rolling in dough...

No, things are not as Sicko would have you believe. All people in the U.S. have access to medical care through so-called emergency rooms that are frequented by people for all medical needs besides emergencies. These emergency rooms are required to treat people whether they can pay or not. We also have a program called Medicaid which pays for people who cannot afford to pay the emergency rooms and cannot afford further treatment for more serious illnesses such as cancer or heart problems. No one in the U.S. need go without medical treatment.
