It really all depends on your lifestyle and your sleeping environment. Is there a lot of noise or light coming into your bedroom? Do you eat a properly balanced meal three times a day? How many servings of vegetables do you eat? Do you drink enough water? Do you exercise? How much stress is in your life? Do you take any drugs/medications?
When your body can't sleep, there's usually something off somewhere else in your life. Normally things like extra noise/light (like your TV, radio, or city noise) or high levels of stress can disrupt a normal sleeping pattern. Try and make sure you have a proper sleeping environment, and if you can't control the noise/light levels at night, invest in earplugs or a night mask. Go to sleep early or at least turn off the lights early. When in a dark environment, your body releases a hormone called melatonin that is responsible for putting you to sleep. But if there are bright lights around (even from a bright digital clock) your body will stop melatonin production.
Also try changing your lifestyle. Eat lots of bright colored vegetables and less meat/sugar/fat. Exercise, if not daily, then at least twice or three times a week. Bring a reusable water bottle around with you. Try several different relaxation methods at night, like taking a warm bath, aromatherapy, or even warm milk. Target stress points in your life (sounds like your troublesome friend is a major stress point) and get rid of or reduce as much stress as you can. Try yoga. Running a humidifier could help, as running water ionizes (charges) the air, which in turn prompts your brain into releasing several chemicals/hormones that relax you. The best cure for insomnia (besides pills) is a healthy lifestyle. Your body knows how to fix itself, given the proper treatment.
If all else fails, talk to your doctor and see what he/she has to say. I'd recommend trying the lifestyle changes first (even if they ARE rather difficult to implement) as pills are always a last resort.
(You might also want to check the rest of the forum, as it seems there are several people who are having sleeping problems. There might be more suggestions there.)
I hope something works for you. :)

Dont drink any sort of caffeine for the duration of the day. Dont do whatever that engages your mind part an hour earlier than mattress. If you cross to a wellness keep you'll be able to get a few tea that relaxes you and makes you particularly sleepy. Make certain your room temperature isnt too sizzling or bloodless. Or routinely annoying approximately matters maintain you up unsleeping. Meditation tapes additionally labored alot for me while i'm going via sleepless durations. If you continue to can not sleep, simply cross do anything efficient rather of annoying approximately the way you can not sleep, so your wasted time, isn't wasted!
