Can an OB/GYN tell how far along you are despite when your last period was?
A little background of where I'm coming from:
I have always had infrequent menstrual cycles, until I started taking birth control. So when I stopped taking birth control and after my last birth control induced period (which happened in late May), I didn't recieve another period. Well the first cycle after getting off birth control and not having a period, I took a pregnancy test (twice, one after a few days of the first) and it said I was not pregnant both times. So I didn't really think twice about knowing my cycle history. The last two weeks I wasn't feeling well and decided to take another pregnancy test and this morning it said I was pregnant.
Thank you everyone for your answers... that makes me feel better because right now it seems like I could be anywhere from 4-11 weeks pregnant, as I really haven't had any of the typical signs of pregnancy. I wish I could give you all 10 points.

Yes, by ultrasound and by a blood test. Unlike urine pregnancy tests, blood tests confirm how much of hcg is in you, which gives you a due date from that number. Its not really wise to go by your last menstrual period because not all women ovulate at the same time contrary to common belief.

you and i are in the same boat. i have always had irregular periods so when i stopped my birth control i didn't think anything of it when i didn't have my next one. i started feeling sick so i took a test and it came out negative so once again i put it out of my head. finally when i went to a clinic my test came out faint but positive.
the doctor had been telling me how far along i was but when i went and got an ultrasound they told me that i was 20 weeks not 24. now i am growing the way i am supposed to at 26 weeks which is how far along i am today.
so yes the ob/gyn can tell how far along you are by doing an ultrasound.

An ultrasound will help, BUT they aren't accurate. When I was induced with my daughter, they did an ultrasound and said she was 6 pounds but she came out 4 pounds.

An ultrasound will give a more accurate estimate about how far along you are.

yes i believe that they should be able to tell. when they do an ultrasound they can get a rough(very rough) estimate of how big your baby is. and they can also tell what organs are forming and at what rate. with this information they should be able to tell roughly how old your baby is.

Yeah, they will do a transvaginal ultra sound to date it. I thought I was 13w5d but really I was only 12 weeks. Good luck
