On paper, the Packard Bell is better spec for the money.

But in my experience HP computers are more reliable - and it most likely looks better, too (not that you should buy things based on looks!)

Packard bell has a better processor. Graphics I don;t know as it only states integrated graphics, the HP also has what appears to be integrated graphics so whichever I would suggest upgrading to a proper graphics card at some point, the integrated graphics card are nowhere near as good as an additional graphics card.

3gb memory is enough for mostly anything and if needed can be easily upgraded in future as both are the same amount this doesn't matter.

The Packard bell also has a larger hard drive.

I wouldn't bother comparing bundled software as its the first thing I would get rid of and put what i want on.

I'd go with the PB simply because the processor is the better of the two, everything else can be upgraded easily if needed at a later date.

Since your buying for your parents, stick with Windows XP because if things were to go awry, they'll have support based on about 5 years of testing, when Vista only came out around January. Dell still gives you the option of buying a computer with Windows XP install although they recommend Vista.

HP. Hands down. I couldn't begin to describe the comparisons, I could write a book.

I personally would buy the second but it is completely up to you =]
