We might be getting a German Shepard?

So mum went to the german Shepherd rescue in catton which is about 5 miles away from were we live and she took our greyhound but all they ad were puppies which were to hyper for her liking so the owner of the rescue (she's also a good friend of my nans) said she will let us know when there is an older german shepard available. So how much exercise do they need off the lead?

Update:

Right. I don't think we will be getting an old, old german shepard I think mum ment like a middle aged one. Also i like the fact that they are smart coz I would really love to be able to teach him/her tricks like speak etc

All dogs are different but in general GSDs are a more high energy breed.

As long as the dog is healthy & able an hour of exercise a day on average is fine. A more high energy dog may need more, but that's something you will be able to figure upon meeting the dog.

GSDs also need mental stimulation, they love to learn & be given a task. So incorporating activities or training into exercising is a good idea.

German Shepherds need a lot of time off lead, probably 1 to 2 hours of walking and running or agility per day. German Shepherds are a herding breed, they tend to get more energy the more they run and walk, so they need more exercise than most breeds do. Good luck.

I have a 20 month GSD he gets roughly 1hour and 30 minutes per day and more at the weekend he gets 30 -45 minutes off lead he loves chasing his ball and the rest of the time on lead to be honest it would be so much easier to let my dog have the full 1hour and 30minutes off lead as he has so much energy but it is important to exercise him on the lead as well!!!

Also to keep him mentally stimulated whilst in the house he has his kong and we have 3 plastic cups and hide treats under one so he can sniff them out I have never known a dog with so much energy and who is so intelligent lol!

Hope you get you GSD soon....good luck!

My GSD gets 130 minutes of exercise a day on average, but she's also a year old.

An older dog wont need as much exercise, but I would give them a 30 minute walk a day minimum unless they're having trouble walking.

It all depend on the dogs health and fitness how much exercise it will need. If you get one that isn't used to lots of exercise but is healthy then you will need to slowly build up the amout it gets. A health fit one need quiet alot of exercise. They are intelligent dogs and need mental exercsie as well as physical so it would love to learn tricks etc. Dogs are never to old to learn new things.

As much as possible for older dogs. Young ones not too much due to history of hip problems in the GSD breed.

older dogs about hour on lead and an hour off per day. young ones about half that.
