would you care to comment on a poem, and is it ever easy seeing an old lover again?

NEXT TIME

By C.S. Scotkin

Don’t look at me,

your soul laid open

like an ancient tome

coated with regrets

like dust .

Don’t reach for my hand.

Pretend memories are false.

See me as a stranger.

Then we can smile

next time we meet.

The poem is very good. I wonder if next time meeting will be easier. I doubt it. This dilemma was touched on by Byron in his poem. When we two parted...

    At the end he says

    If I should meet thee

    After long years,

    How should I greet thee?

    With silence and tears.

    And Drayton

Shake hands for ever, cancel all our vows,

And when we meet at any time again,

Be it not seen in either of our brows

That we one jot of former love retain.

Is it ever easy to meet with an old lover? So far I have avoided this dilemma but a high school reunion looms and I am unsettled at the thought of seeing my first love again. I am not sure why. Perhaps I want us to remain in memories as forever young and green!

Oh goodness gracious this is good. Can I relate? Yes very much so. You summed up my feelings, every time I see my ex husband (we have to meet because the grandchildren live with me). It's just so damn awkward and I can't look at him without raking up the past. Excellent write

Hmmm...yes, we cannot turn back the clock. Interesting, the double simile, "like an ancient tome/coated with regrets/like dust. Perhaps I would have said, "like an ancient tome/ coated with dusty regrets,"---or something ---if you wanted to keep the stanza five lines long...

This jumped off the screen at me and grabbed me by the lapels! As the kids say 'It's awesome' - simple, poignant and with a few words saying so much. I love it.

(I only ever had one lover....my dear one!)

I can feel your feelings here even though I feel very differently.

    There are no past loves

    love is eternal like cockroaches

    you make my skin crawl

    like a family reunion

    that pleasant sticky feeling

    of shared pheromones.

and the answer to the question(s) yes, I'll comment and NO it is not.

I enjoyed the way you took us to a hopeful end/new beginning.

I've only known 1 love beyond family. A passionate love that exists, flourishing. I've known her since I was 2.
