It stands for Audio Visual. Interestingly, in Season 2 Ep. 18, Neil Goldman's hat has the letter's "VA" on it when congratulating Meg, rather than the normal AV for "Audio Visual"

niel is one of those nerds that sets up all of the audio and video equipment for his school (they are frequently made fun of in pop culture via tv and movies...like in 10 things i hate about you)
its suppose to make it more obvious he is a nerd (like we needed help lol)
