how did we create the number pi?

I am fasinated with pi, it never repeats nor ends, so how did we come up with this number and why doesn't it end or repeat? Serious answers only please! Thank you

    Lee, the best way to answer your question is to recommend the following little book, which should REALLY fascinate you!

    "A history of pi", by Petr Beckman; it's a Barnes and Noble book, so you should find it easily.

    Circumference divided by diameter, which is interesting if we want to calculate area as we will never know the true area of a circle or sphere if not in terms of pi!

    We didn't create it; it has always been there. The ratio of circumference to diameter was discovered by Archimedes, I believe, and was computed by many different people through the years. The most accurate value of π has been done by computers. It is irrational, so it doesn't end and doesn't repeat. In fact, it is transcendental, which means there is no algebraic equation that has π as its root.

    The ancient mathematicians created it by dividing the circumference of a circle by its diameter.
