In your opinion, what is a state of personal poverty in the USA?

I'm not talking about $s. This is posed as a situational issue (no car etc.). You may regionalize it if you would like.

In my opinion there is very little poverty in the USA compared to other Nations in the world. There is aid for most people who are in poverty and they can get clothes food and a place to stay.

Even at our Poverty level on average the USA lives the most luxurious life style in the WORLD. Especially when compared to places in South America Africa Russia China and so on.

In my opinion poverty is not having a place to sleep (shelter) and not having food. Medical care is accessible to EVERYONE when it is absolutely needed (ER).

Even if you don't have a car their are public transportation system (buses).

I think many people have a miss guided view of what poverty truly is. They also have a miss guided view of what is truly needed. Cars cell phones and many things like that are all luxuries.

Depends on where you live. In town,no car isn't an issue with public transport. In a rural setting, it's more of a problem.

Electricity, running water, hot water and even refrigeration could be considered baseline--- lacking those you live in poverty.

Dishwashers, TV, AC, Cable, Computers, Telephones are considered luxuries.

Mr. Cowley: Nobody is entitled to anything which requires production unless you are claiming that people are entitled to the labor of others (and that's slavery).

Poverty in the US is luxury overseas

  • FDR believed every American was entitled to clean water, a home, a 401k, social security, health care, and food for the family. With the exclusion of the financial aspects, we can all agree that Americans are entitled to those things (if you're a leftist like me). Unfortunately, not every American can afford food, a water system, or even a home.

    My definitions:

    upper-class - can support a middle-class lifestyle without working

middle-class - can afford house+car+send kids to private college

working/lower-class - can afford house(low rent area) or apartment plus car, barely

poverty - relying on government support (subsidized or public housing, social security or welfare) or homeless or unable to purchase enough food.

It seems like almost everyone here manages to live in personal poverty. It's called materialism.
