You have a VATS key system in your car. You will not be able to hotwire the car.

The simplest way to get a set of keys is to call an experienced automotive locksmith and have them come to your car and make a set of keys in about an hour. Look in the yellow pages under locksmiths and you will find them. You are looking at about $125-$175 for a set of vats keys.

That is your simplest way. Hope this helps.

What year is the car? You can have keys made simply by the VIN number. If you can prove you're the owner, hopefully the paperwork is in your hands not in the car, also the make model year of vehicle would help, I'm a former repo man, so I could tell you if the key is transponder or not, and approximate cost. Anything newer than 2005 would typically be a transponder key which could be anywhere from $90-130 for a replacement.

Transponder replacement with VIN: Go to a dealer, one that specializes in your make of car, and tell them what happened, show them your paperwork, photo id and the VIN number showing you are the owner. They will make a mechanical key, basically.it will open the door but not start the car (if you try it will just go runnananananan and never start, sure sign you have a transponder key) hopefully the dealership can tell you how to program the key without bringing the car in, but you may just have to get a tow truck to bring the car to the dealership to program the key. Either that or contact a locksmith, some locksmiths have the tools to program the new key in their van. I used to carry a suitcase style box, that had a computer to program transponder keys, I'm sure many locksmiths have the same thing.

Mechanical only: This is basically Suzuki, Kia, Hyundai etc, or cars older than 2002. This was before transponder keys became standard, you can get a basic mechnical key for $45-55 same with the VIN number, or same with a locksmith, he can come to you, make the key right there. Some locksmiths are so good, they just use a blank turn the key to make impressions and do manual cuts.

Best bet is call a locksmith and see how much they charge to come out and make a key for your make model year vehicle, and then call the dealership and ask them how much they would charge, typically a dealership would charge more, but if you have a higher end car, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc, you HAVE to bring it to dealership to program the key, though I sincerely hope you don't have one of those because those are typically $200 keys.

If you purchased the vehicle from a dealership, call them and ask what can be done to procure another key based on the VIN number. If the car was purchased from a private party, call your nearest car dealer selling that make and ask them how you can get a key. You'll probably need your paperwork (title, bill of sale, etc.) in order to obtain a key. If it's locked in the car and you have AAA, call and ask them to open the vehicle for you. If not, call a locksmith and see if they can get into the car. Depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle, it may be possible for a locksmith to make a key using a blank. If not, it may be necessary to have it towed to the nearest dealership or have someone hotwire it so you can drive there.
