mormons- is coffee a "no" due to something in the bean? what if the bean is used for medicinal purposes?
i don't think anyone knows for sure about the reasons behind coffee, but i suffer from insomnia pretty bad due to racing thoughts and there is a homeopathic remedy using raw coffee beans that is supposed to be super good for calming racing thoughts and allowing you to sleep. i really want to try it, but don't know. is it up to me to pray about it or does anyone know anything about this?
jaxa- no they don't. if i get a headache, i am drugging up- while we don't do crack or drink beer, there is no law against caffiene- i love my dr pepper and so do many of my friends. many don't drink simply because mormons try to be more health conscience, but i, even as a mormon, think that that can be hypocritical if you overindulge on brownies but then won't have a coke:)
river and jp- thanks for being respectful, but we do drink caffiene- at least many of us. some mormons have chosen to interpret the law on their own (which anyone with a brain and decide how to live) to mean no caffiene, but church doctrine does not restrict caffiene- as far as that goes, it is up to us to do as we feel right. my family drinks it, but my husband has to be careful because he gets addicted and goes through painful withdrawls when he doesn't drink it

if a doctor is urging you to take it, discuss it with your bishop (which is a lot more detailed and better than an online forum) and make your decision.
It's "hot drinks" which has been interpreted as coffee and tea.
I always look at it as more about the revelation than the bean anyway; I don't know that there is anything evil in the bean, addiction to caffeine can be real, but if your life would be improved by it look at all of the options and alternatives and discuss it with your bishop because his recommendation is far more important than mine.

this is usually prescribed when insomnia is caused by the nervous system being over-stimulated.
caffeine is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in the leaves, seeds and fruit of tea, coffee, cacao, kola trees (and more than 60 other plants).
since caffeine occurs naturally in the coffee bean/seed and caffeine is what causes the "jitters" associated with coffee, I would definitely look into it before trying it irregardless......
the idea behind this kind of homeopathic treatment is "Let likes cure likes". sometimes it works.
as far as is it against the WoW...I would say talk with your dr. (so you are prepared with answers to questions and info) and then talk to your bishop.
good luck.

As far as I know, it's not the caffeine that's the problem. There are other things in them that are not good for us.
Whatever good is in them can be extracted and put into some other form, like capsules, or suspensions, something like that. Look in a health food store.

Do not cite me for orthodoxy on this, however, it has been my observation that the Mormon Church has no qualms about medications but they do reject unnecessary drugs.
As I have understood it, coffee and some sodas are rejected for the fact they contain caffeine, which is an unnecessary drug. They thus preference avoiding such drinks. However, if you could justify the substances involved as having medicinal use, I don't see that they would have any great objection.

Word of wisdom just says no coffee, teas or hot drinks.
Personally, I drink energy drinks and caffeinated sodas all the time.
I'm sure you'd be alright using your homeopathic treatment.

I heard Mountain Dew has more caffeine in it then any drink or coffee...
My husband will drink cup of coffee before he goes to bed, how he sleeps I do not know...I can;t do this, I will be up all night long.
In UT legalistic Mormons would drink decaf soda pop, legalistic Mormons would drink decaffeinated soda pop. It all depends on you. Never heard of coffee having a calming effect for my migraines it would always cause my heart to raise but my headaches went away, you must be ADD if it calms you.

If I'm not mistaken - it's caffeine that is forbidden.
