Why do Muslims want to build a community center near the World Trade Center site, in the financial district?
I would have thought they would want to have it in a more residential area. (I don't know NY geography but my impression is that not many people live in the area of the World Trade Center site; am I right?)

Devout Muslims pray several times a day. They're not just wanting to build another mosque. They're wanting a convenient place to pray while they're away from home at work. There is a small mosque in the basement of a nightclub nearby, but it's nowhere near big enough. So trading this land for another place to build is probably not going to work as well.
From the link below:
--"Peter Awn, a professor of Islamic religion at Columbia University, said a study he was part of found Muslims in New York rarely worshiped in their neighborhoods.
Downtown Manhattan suits their needs because it is well connected by public transportation and has a large concentration of jobs, for example, in the Wall Street area.
"The downtown place is perfect because it would be a hub for people in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and if you work downtown it's a great place to pop in for noon prayers if you are observant," Awn said."--
BTW, cracks me up to see people suggest Muslims would be offended by a strip joint or club when they use the basement of one on a regular basis.

Friday prayer, the most important one of the week for us, is during work hours. It makes practical sense. I was opposed to it when I thought it was being built on Ground Zero. But that doesn't seem to be the case at all. So I don't see the harm in it. People asked for Moderate Muslims to take a stand and represent Islam properly. Well here it is.

All of Manhattan has commercial properties. There are more residential neighborhoods uptown but I dont think they would like it if they are protesting the commercial location where the building is now. They already own this building. Why condemn all of one religion for what a radical militant group of men did?

Actually, it makes perfect sense. There will be seven world trade towers at the real ground zero. There will be many foreign Muslim owned businesses leasing space there, a long with many American Muslims working there also.

Why are there Christian churches in Oklahoma City, which was a victim to terrorism by a Christian? The fact is, we don't and shouldn't judge American Muslims by nutcases from Saudi Arabia. Hence, this being America, Land of the Free and home of the Brave...
Not land of fascism and home of cowherds.

According to those in the know it is to proclaim a victory over their foes.
This means that they would be claiming victory for the 9/11 attacks and putting a mosque there makes it plain to all the rest of the muslims.

Its been there for many years before 9/11 for Muslim prayer services, just now its going to be renovated and called a Mosque.
