It is said that SHAKTI MAA had created BRAHMA, VISHNU & MAHESH and had allocated them with duties.
Their consorts, SARASWATI, LAKSHMI & UMA were forms of SHAKTI MAA herself.
SHAKTI MAA later came to be known and took the form of DURGA MAA.

If you want the Legend, they are supposed to have sprung from Shakthi, where Brahma was born of her thought and emerged from her forehead, Vishnu from her breath and Shiva from her tear.
And, before you ask the question, the Primordial Shakthi and Shiva [not to be confused with the Shiva of the Trinity and his wife who are also similarly named] who were the Male and Female Aspects of the Eternal Force, came from the Sound of the Omkara, which is referred to in the Shiva Puranas.
However, in the Vedas and the Upanishads, it says, very clearly, that "none can fathom the Kula of a rishi nor the bottom of the sea; then, what is the point of asking how came the Beginning and how will be the End of Days?"
I forget the correct Sanskrit of this shloka, but, it's very common in present day Indian languages as an adage.
And, by the way, the Brahma from the navel of Vishnu upon the Lotus is from the Vishnu Puranas.
As you know, the name Purana means a Mythical Tale or a Story.

According to the Advaita Philosophy, God is only one. Astro physicists too claim that the whole universe originated from one small point of infinite energy some fifteen billion years ago. The sun and other planets came into existence billions of years later. Everything including you and I are made up of particles of the Almighty. " Tatvamasi" just means "you are that" (God). We do not realise it but the maharishis of yore like Adi Sankara could realise that. Since every thing has God inside it, there is nothing wrong in worshiping any idol giving it a name. This what precisely we are doing for our convenience.

These were all part of God's dream. Creation was always depicted as a picture of Brahma sleeping.
