High Blood Pressure Whenever I See The Doctor - White Coat Syndrome?

I have normal blood pressure, but lately when I go to the doctor my blood pressure rises to like 145 to 165. When I leave his office my blood pressure goes to normal. I was driving to his office and I could feel my heart really pumping. I could do nothing to stop it. I had my blood pressure kit with me and the reading was high. This has happened a couple of times. My doctor told me to get a blood pressure kit that has the taped reading and before I come to see him have my reading done a couple of times a day and the readings can be saved on the tape.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try so that I can have a normal reading in the office?

Single readings in his office are of no real significance anyway, because diagnoses are never made based on single readings, if there is a concern over your blood pressure, the GP will usually always do ambulatory blood pressure monitoring over a period of 24 hours. This will give a more accurate analysis of your BP.- So don't worry about it, "white coat syndrome" is very common and your GP is aware of it. It's often not something you can really control and there is no real need.

I have the same problem!! I finally bought a digital BP machine. simple to use and accurate. Check it regularly and different times of the day. It even has a journal to record your readings. Sometimes, certain meds can elevate your BP. A lot of things can. But it is imperative to know if you actually have normal or high BP.

Take your blood pressure several times a week and note it in a journal to take with you next time you visit - they know about white coat syndrome real well the first week into rotation, ha ha

do they take your blood pressure the minute you get into the office?

If so, ask them to take it after the rest of your appointment which will give you a chance to calm yourself.

Some doctors are having their nurses take blood pressure during the course of the check up rather than first thing because of this very reason.

How about just going to sit in the waiting room for a while and reading or just watching what's going on. Perhaps the surroundings are contributing to your anxiety.
