Do you respect other religions?

I find that people who follow a specific religion are often disrespectful of the followers of a different religion, even though most religions are based off of the same ideas. Do you have a religion, and do you respect people with different beliefs than you have?

I'm an atheist, and I do. If someone doesn't shut up about god I'm going to tell them I don't think god exists. I won't tell them they're stupid (well, maybe on answers I do) everybody has an opinion, just because it's not mine doesn't mean it should be ignored. That would be stupid. This world would be nowhere if everyone just used their own ideas.

Anyways, yes, I am respectful. Especially so when I am being taught by another person about a new religion I don't know about. I enjoy it, all of the culture and beliefs and it IS based around the same idea. A few names are switched around, some people are dead or don't exist in others *cough* Jesus *cough*, so it's neat. I don't see the point of mouthing off other people because they think mary has appeared in a grilled cheese sandwich, where will that get me?

I am a Christian but I refuse to label myself into a group (Catholic, Protestant, etc) because I believe that most religions do share the same ideas and have more in common than not in common. For examle, I believe you can substitute Buddha for Christ and meditation for prayer in a lot of cases. I do not like how religous persons focus on differences instead of what they have in common. Protestants and Catholics, through out history. Christianity and Jewish people come from the same history and should hold each other more respectfully as well. In social issues, I believe naturally that man and women were meant to be together for procreation purposes, obviously; however, if man and women choose to be with the same gender it is not a religious issue but a personal issue that should not be discussed in public when there are so many other important issues. I am not gay. I personally believe that there is not much of a line between personal opinions and "religion" and the lines are blurred too often ( think Catholic Priests/child predators, Baptists' " everyone is going to Hell (if you smoke cigarettes, get a divorce, drink alcohol, etc.) Muslim views of covering women up and walking behind men" Religion has become too personal and too serious and it is mostly disrespectful to everyone in and outside of their own religion. There are only a handful of people out there who are respectful of people is what it boils down to, religious or not. I do agree that most people who follow a specific religion are often the most disrespectful of followers of a different religion as well.

All those religions that are respectable, I would respect.

All those that are not worthy of respect, I would not respect.

As an Atheist, I think that all religions are based on errors and some on outright lies, but, as I said, I respect those worthy of respect and do not respect those that are unworthy.

    Permit me to illustrate.

I respect Christianity because though they had their faults, they evolved and changed their ways.

I respect the Catholic Christians because they began the Modern Education System, the Modern Hospital System, the Modern Social Service System where they used money given in tithe and donations to build schools, colleges and Universities where the Priests and Nuns actively worked for a pittance to build up Courses on Science, Arts and Commerce etc, the Libraries etc before they trained and established the systems of Education which they spread for all, including the non-Christians. Similarly, they worked on the Modern Health Care System when no one else was doing that and built the Hospitals, Medical Colleges and Para Medical Corps which are still called the Red Cross while other "Religions" didn't do anything at all for all this. Similarly with their building Orphanages, Old Age Homes, Soup Kitchens, Home for the Destitute etc.

I do not respect Islam, because it does not respect any others. It has a stated Agenda for World Domination and the extermination of all others and that is not acceptable to me.

    I hope this clarifies matters.

I respect all serious religions and philosophies as religions and philosophies and understand why people believe in them as I have studied how our modern religions came to be.

I think a lot people who truly believe in a religion may be disrespectful because it's what they believe to be true and are quite narrow minded and not yet a respectful human being. Some people take this to an extreme because they don't truly understand their religion (eg. Islamic extremists).

Personally I try not to be disrespectful to other religions, I'm growing up as a half-caste Muslim in a predominantly white community where many view all Muslims and all 'coloured' people as terrorists, which is of course completely untrue. Because of this I try to be respectful to everyone for their beliefs as I understand what it's like to be judged and stereotyped based on religion.

I'm a Christian, specifically an Adventist, and yes I do respect the other religions, but you're right. It's a common thing on here and other forums to disrespect other religions! Disappointing when you see people of a similar faith do the same!

As a Christian myself- i wouldn't refute the person who posed the question you gave as an example cos it's true. Scientists cannot prove the world has existed for over a million years or what ever they say. However- if a Christian was to post a something that says atheists should be wiped off the face of the earth and that Christians should have zero tolerance to atheists and i was to come across such a question- i would vehemently refute it, because that sort of attitude is wrong and goes completely opposite to what the Bible commands us (to love our enemies)

I personally am a methodist, but as I am concerned there is but 1 God, even though He has many different names; He still is the only God; my creator; so yes I would say I try to respect the beliefs of others, and their religions.Because we are all brothers & sisters in Christ.

I do not respect any false religion and I do not respect people who distort what the bible teaches but I DO respect an individual's right to believe whatever he/she wants to believe. It is possible to be just as sincere about a false teaching as it is to be sincere about Christianity but the thing is that many are sincerely WRONG. Sincerity is not what will give us eternal life with Christ.

Of course I respect other religions. Who am I to tell someone else who and what to believe in, I don't have that right; nobody does.

    Btw, I'm Atheist.

Yes, I respect other religions, because they are so diverse. Sometimes lack of information can seem like intentional disrespect...that's too bad.
