If you really look at it for a while it's tough to tell

I always looked at it as a right handed batter. And it's actually not Harmon Killebrew. Directly from the mouth of the man who designed the MLB logo : His son once heard a radio broadcaster say that Minnesota Twins slugger Harmon Killebrew served as his model for the logo. Mr. Dior's response: "That's completely untrue. It's not Harmon Killebrew. It's not anyone in particular."

It's a silhouette of a batter. It is impossible to tell. I would think that the original creators had no intention of the batter being either left or right handed.

My guess is left-handed. The thumb placement looks a little awkward for a righty. Great question though. I've never really thought about it before.
By the way it's not modeled after any player. It was chosen for its ability to be any player of any race or hand.

The silhouette was modeled after Pete Rose. It was drawn to appear equally as a left and right handed batter. I believe the NBA logo has the same characteristic.

A simple Wikipedia check reveals the following:
"The silhouette was chosen specifically because of its ambiguity: the batter could be right- or left-handed and of any ethnic background."

Haha I just stared at it for a few minutes... it IS tough to tell! Kind of looks like he's batting left-handed to me.
