What is wrong with American society today?

When looking at the world through a magnifying glass, everything seems bigger. These shows you give as examples are not representative of all aspects of American society and culture. Instead of the traveling circus coming to town and people lining up to go to the freak-show tent, we have Fox Network, Jerry Springer (borne from an earlier incarnation, the Morton Downey Jr. Show) broadcasting continuously, and people "lining up" upon their respective couches armed with all the finest in snack acoutrements.

These things do happen; some people are chronically dysfunctional and do bad things. But the statistics of such things has not changed much over time - just the attention these things get. Humans have always had a blood-lust for all things sensational, and because of this, are easily manipulated to behave according to the market within which they reside. Disengage from the media tit and you will begin to see a whole population of humans doing the right things.

LOL. Ok. Where to start. Before you come on here acting all mature and intelligent, and talking about how stupid others are, take a look at yourself. The Jerry springer show and Maury show are NOT REAL. And even if they where, theirs nothing wrong with drinking an smoking weed. You are a perfect example of how society is goin downhill, just because you don't have any friends and don't like to go outside and have fun, maybe smoke a joint and funnel a couple beers, doesn't mean everyone else should suffer. It's the liberal "I can do anything I want" garbage that was put on society and now kids AND adults think they can do whatever they want and don't care if other people get offended or insulted or even hurt. Girls are proud to dress like sluts and be called B**ches and have sex with anything and the boys are no better they dress like trashy skaters with ugly greasy shaggy hair and call all women B**ches. The stupid irresponsible parents think giving their kids anything they want (no matter how expensive it is) is love and the right thing to do.

Yeah I think it is much worse today than ever...people (mostly kids) are more pampered and spoiled rotten while back then 40's, 50's 60's some kids/families couldn't afford a christmas or just didn't have one and were taught to be grateful for every little thing they have. But today's modern kids are spoiled little B**tards who say "Gimme! Gimme! Gimmie!" "I deserve it!" I see people bowing down to babies and little kid's all the time treating them like royalty and have ZERO respect for the elderly people.

The problem is the damn parents and if they are called out about their parenting they blame something or someone else. The second problem is the stupid Media, Internet and Hollywood raising kids today. Parents don't want to take FULL responsibility for their kid's actions/behavior. Instead they will buy them something like a toy to shut them up. The education in this country is garbage now. Kids go to school in their pajamas and go on Facebook and text all day than listen in class and the stupid teachers let them do it. So we are in deep trouble because these kids will be running the country in 20 years or less.

Guess what...It's going to get worse before it gets better. This drug problem is at epidemic proportions now. My sister-in-law is a counselor and 99% of the people who come into her office are drug addicts. The education break down started with pushing kids through with subpar grades. Teachers aren't allowed to tell students that they have spelled a word wrong. I didn't believe it when I heard that now I find out you don't even have to know how to read to gain a high school diploma. This is the caliber of citizens who are going out into the world to stand for America. Oh goodie.

Almost 50% of people think tax payers should take care of them while they sit on the couch smoking their "medical marijuana". I can only imagine 20 years from now.

I sympathize with you. I'm from the United Kingdom.. and we have exactly the same problem. We also have the problem where there are more foreigners than british in our country. People who don't and won;t learn the lingo.. that pisses me off. There are now big cities e.g. Birmingham who have schools that teach in Arabic because there aren't enough teachers and time to teach all the arabians english :( Maybe this is the same in the USA.. im not sure...

Yes you're right, but a lot of countries are in the same situation as America such as Ireland. Parents here are oblivious to their children's lives, they have no clue what there little angel is really up to..so yes society is getting worse and worse as the years go on everywhere..

The are so many levels to the answer you seek it's not even funny. You may get people trying to answer but they wouldn't... I mean COULDN'T even cover the tip of the iceberg.
