In MS Windows, go to Start - All Programs - System Tools - Character Map

When you get to Character Map, do a right-click and create a shortcut for the Desktop. Then you'll always have it near to hand.

In Character Map, select Arial font [it's the first easy one] and do a quick scan down the pages.

You'll find ± on the first page and lower down you'll find √ Maybe on the 4th page after the Arabic symbols.

Most mathematical symbols are found there. If you want something different from the Arial collection, try Symbol or Verdana fonts.

    OK?
