What is a good brand of dog food sold at grocery store?
I have 2 yorkie puppies. I usually get their food from Petsmart or Petco. I only feed them hard food. Is there a good brand of dog food sold at grocery stores for yorkies or small breed puppies?

No..lol. Very few grocery stores stock a good quality food. If they have something like Newman's Own that would be decent quality. Otherwise I'd much rather go to a feed store or a pet store and pick a good quality food. Read the label. I like to avoid corn, wheat, and by-products. Corn and wheat are mostly cheap fillers with a little nutrition. By-products get a dog what they need but it comes in the form of beaks and chicken feet and things of that nature. I'd rather they actually get the muscle meat of the chicken :)

Many dogs today have allergies to the wheat, corn and soy products that are in most brands of dog foods.
If you are wanting a better brand of food choose one without the wheat, corn and soy products. If you are worried about cost...try a local feedstore. They carry good brands of food cheaper than the retail stores. I get a 20 pound bag of Diamond Naturals Lamb & Rice formula for $18 and it last my dog 4 1/2 months. It is a smaller kibble and has no wheat, corn or soy in it.
Feed stores are a great place to go for quality and price.

A few grocery stores carry Harmony Farms or Newman's Own. Those are the only decent foods I have ever seen in a grocery store.

When looking for a food you want to stay away from by-products, ground yellow corn, and any artificial flavors or colors. You want to get a premium food (basically a food that you HAVE to go to a pet specialty store to buy). When feeding a premium food, you may pay more per bag, but you will feed less and have less yard clean up (a big plus!) so in the long run it is actually cheaper.
Nutro makes excellent food. They have 3 lines: Max, Natural Choice, and Ultra. With all three lines you will get an all natural, human grade food with added vitamins and minerals; no ground yellow corn, which is a filler and a big allergen among pups; no by-products, which can include heads, feet and intestines; and no artificial flavors or colors. Nutro also has the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 6) to help promote healthy skin and coat and also reduce shedding. Max is your basic premium food and from what I’ve seen the lowest priced premium food on the market. Natural Choice has taurine added and is made more for specific needs (i.e. sensitive skin, sensitive stomach, etc.). And Ultra is a holistic food with more fruits and vegetables, also known as super foods, which help with your pups immune system, joints, heart, vision, brain, etc.

There are a few brands available if you have a Stop N Shop, Shaws or Trader Joe's around.
Shaws/Stop n Shop:
Harmony Farms http://harmonypetproducts.com/
Newman's Own http://www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/home/
Trader Joe's has a lamb meal and rice formula that is actually pretty high quality, and also comes in a small kibble size.

To: "E" your answer is so far from the truth, it is pathetic!!! God help you if you ever have children!!
The best grocery store brand, would be Iams. You say you usally buy your dog food at Petsmart or Petco, so the best food for your little Yorkie's would be Science Diet toy/small breed formula! I would never recommend Science Diet to someone with a large breed dog, but their small breed formula is great, and small dog's do wonderful on it!! Good Luck, hope this helps!!

All dogs should be fed on Complete dry dog foods bought in bags. he start with puppy age then move onto adult. Ask your vet, either call in yourself or telephone to recommend a Brand.
They will sell the brands they suggest but will also recommend brands that are available at larger pet stores.
