toddler has swollen eyelids...?

I looked at my daughter a little while ago, and noticed that her upper and lower eyelid on her left eye is swollen. Not quite swollen shut, but def. very puffy and reddish colored. It doesn't -quite- look like a black eye, and no one has noticed her hit her eye on anything. Her dad has the car at work, so we can't really rush her to the doctor right this second without calling him home. Her eyeball itself looks normal, no redness or anything, just her eyelid. She isn't sick, no runny nose, no fever... no discharge from the eye, either. I've been putting a cold wet rag on it to get the swelling down, but I am not sure what it could be, or if it's something I need to take her in tonight for, or if it can wait until morning. She has rubbed it a little, although I have been trying to keep her hands away from her eyes. Suggestions or ideas?

Is your child allergic to anything? Allergies can very much cause swollen eyelids however it can also be associated with other symptoms like runny nose etc. If it's pink eye, there should be a discharge associated with the swelling, and it should also be itchy. If you notice that your daughter is showing other symptoms on top of the swelling, you may need to see a doctor immediately.

    Toddler Swollen Eye

My son recently had puffy swollen eyes. It looked like someone punched him in the eye. The doctor confirmed that it was pink eye. I couldn't see redness on the eyeball. Apparently, it was only red inside his eyelid (if you gently pulled it down).

If it is pinkeye, it's highly contagious. Wash your hands and disinfect everything -- including washing your linens. I would see if her dad is able to come home to take her to the doctor's -- or maybe you can call a cab. She may need antibacterial eye drops right away. If she's an infant, it may require more serious treatment. I think you should, of course, get a doctor's opinion. Does your pediatrican have an after hours emergency line? I think this justifies a call. Maybe they can give you some suggestions? Good luck!

This sounds like a condition called Blepharitis, which is an inflammation of the Eyelids. Commonly, it resolves by itself within 2 to 4 weeks, during which time you will need to keep your daughters hands scrupulously clean, since it's bacterial. It can become more severe, in which case you'll need to see a pediatrician for advice, so if you notice things like discharge from her eye, redness in the white areas or the eyelids themselves, or stickiness in the eye, get her some treatment.

You can see an image of a child with blepharitis (this is an infant mind) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Infant_with_blep...

If you increase the hygiene, like I say though, this should go away without too much hassle.

It's probably the start of pinkeye. As long as everything else seems normal, I'd just take her in first thing in the morning. If it would make you feel better, you can always call your on call pediatrician and ask what they recommend for your own peace of mind. Most insurance companies also offer a 24/7 nurse line that you could also call.
