Kindly explain benefits of OM Chanting?

Explain benefits of OM Chanting and is it necessary to remember the meaning while chanting it? Which is the right word meaning of OM for its uttering? Kindly try to give right word meaning only in one word? Like “OM sarabRakshak ” “OM sarab sarabShktiman” then explain it's literal meaning.

Update:

Sorry, mistakenly I type incorrect word. Correct line is:-

Like “OM sarabRakshak ” “OM sarabShktiman” then explain its literal meaning.

Update 2:

Tell me more clear, how I have to chant it????

May I chant it like “OM..OM..OM..OM..OM” simply repeats it again and again.

Otherwise

“OM almighty” “OM almighty” “OM almighty” I mean I have to repeat its meaning whenever I said OM.

Update 3:

Thanks to all of you to answer my question, you all tried your best to clear my doubt.

I am agreeing with each and everyone, but still I am disagreeing with some points of few peoples. I don’t want to mention their name. Kindly try to clear my doubt through sending more description by mail massage.

Once again thanks a lot.

Olden day’s people followed religions to attain the salvation. Jews practised Judaism to enter in to the Kingdom of God, Christians followed Christianity to enter in to heaven, Muslims followed Islam to attain Jannat, Brahmans followed Vedic religion to attain Moksha, and Buddhist followed Buddhism to attain Nirvana.

But now a day’s people have forgotten the need of salvation and subsequently the thought of salvation vanished.

Thoughts of the people now are filled up only with wants and greed, and people are looking only for easy ways to fulfil their desires. Taking this as an advantage so many new Baba’s and Guru's’s are cropping up in India.

Chanting names or by tying threads can change peoples lives, the situation of India and all the Indians would be different.

It is time to realise, at least for the people who are educated and who has some wisdom and understanding.

If you really want to find out the meaning of Om or AUM you can not come to any conclusion. Too many crooks destroyed the originality by giving different misinterpretations.

If you want to add any new God in to Hinduism you just have to use the banner of Om or AUM, people will think it is part of Hinduism, without finding any facts or any connectivity or any relation.

Hindus quotes Vedic religion is foundation for Hinduism, but look in to the details as indicated below:

Vedic religion believed in one God, God is Spirit, there was no Idol worship and no avatars of God. Important ritual was animal sacrifice, Brahmans use to slaughter the animals and they were Non vegetarians.

But now Hinduism is filled with full of Idols and Avatars and Sacrifices are replaced by Pujas, why and who changed them?

Please realise the importance of salvation of your soul. If you win the world and lose your soul what is the benefit for you. Know that your soul is eternal. Find the way to attain Moksha.

    Importance Of Om Chanting

  • 1 decade ago

Explain benefits of OM Chanting and is it necessary to remember the meaning while chanting it?

It would help you to know that the sound, which is AUM is developed in 3 stages of rising from the "A" as "aohhhh" at the navel, to the "U" as "ooooh" at the heart level and the "M" as the "mmm" at the level of the throat.

AUM represents the three stages of Life - that you were born, shall live and shall die. This is the Philosophy behind the Hindu Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who represent these 3 stages.

You do not utter it, but resonate it to get the full benefits of the chant in meditation.

Adding other words to AUM is meaningless. It merely means Om is the Universal Protector in your first phrase there and Om is the Omni Potent in the second.

People of different Hindu denominations use Om namah Shivaya etc to mean OM is Shiva etc, which is ridiculous because the sound already contains the 3 Aspects of Life.

To achieve the correct results, you need to sit in a comfortable position with the spine erect and the throat made straight by positioning the chin a little bit raised to allow the straight and easy passage of the air and then close your eyes and bring your mind to focus upon producing the sounds in a single long flow imagining the sound to rise from a very low Aah not to a reverberant treble of the Mmmm.

Ideally, one would use the Padmasana of Yoga, but those who cannot do that posture may sit in a chair and focus on keeping the body straight and making the sound.

It has been proven that the correct making of the sound and focusing of the mind enhances Alpha Waves which brings the Brain to a very stable level, and it helps clear constrictions in cardio-thoracic region.

However, learning this under a skilled Guide is advisable.

The rest of your questions are redundant.

    All the best.

    EDIT

Let me repeat, OM is not a chant, it's in the resonance.

You need to make the sound resonate.

    Repeating OM is useless.

Please ask an expert to guide you in Pranayama before your try the OM resonance.

Even achieving the simple Dhyana Mantra - "OM, OM, OM, OM Shanthi, Shanthi, Shanthi hih" is a major achievement.

Each of those sounds need to be very elongated and equal to the length of the indrawn breath when used to make the resonance slowly climbing up to awaken the Kundalini Shakthi.

OM is considered to be the universal mantra, the sound of the universe. It is not possible to explain the meaning in words, though volumes have been written about it. It is better to practise and experience it for yourself than to read about it.

OM can be chanted in two main ways - as it is written, OM or divided into three - A - U - M. The second way is said to be more powerful and I have found it to be so myself.

OM can be chanted aloud, silently, whispered, or written. No one way is necessarily 'better' than another.

The benefits I have experienced include a sense of peace, calm and well-being, and a sense of being connected to all living things.

You can also write it in the Sanskrit and this is perhaps more powerful.

When you chant OM, your mouth should say the sounds Aa-Uu-Mm, which blens to sound the word OM. The ending Mm-part should last as long as the O-part. One chant of OM should last about 4 seconds, its best to start by chanting out loud, as you progress you may wish to start chanting within your own mind. You should breathe in slowly and then breathe out while chanting Om. Just chanting Om alone is fine, but you can also chant OM SHAKTI OM, which draws on the Adhiparashakti, or Supreme-Energy, which runs through the entire universe.

Just chanting Om can relieve mental stresses, aid physical pains, remove effects of the evil-eye, remove black magic and influence of spirits and awaken Kundalini Sakthi within you.

OM sarabRakshak means om protect all and OM sarabShktiman means om has all the power.

Now coming to main question-what are the benefits of chanting om.

First of all, it is a thing to be experienced and not explained. however I will narrate as uner.

    1. If chanted repeatedly, it drives you inward.

    2. If chanted with breath in and out, it helps in meditatation.

    3. It relaxes mind like anything.

Before the beginning, the Brahman (absolute reality) was one and non-dual. It thought, "I am only one -- may I become many." This caused a vibration which eventually became sound, and this sound was Om. Creation itself was set in motion by the vibration of Om. The closest approach to Brahman is that first sound, Om. Thus, this sacred symbol has become emblematic of Brahman just as images are emblematic of material objects.

The vibration produced by chanting Om in the physical universe corresponds to the original vibration that first arose at the time of creation. The sound of Om is also called Pranava, meaning that it sustains life and runs through Prana or breath. Om also represents the four states of the Supreme Being. The three sounds in Om (AUM) represent the waking, dream and deep sleep states and the silence which surrounds Om represents the "Turiya" state.

Because the first of the three states of consciousness is the waking state, it is represented by the sound "A" pronounced like "A" in accounting. Because the dream state of consciousness lies between the waking and the deep sleep states, it is represented by the letter "U" which lies between the "A" and "M". This "U" is pronounced like the "U" in would. The last state of consciousness is the deep sleep state and is represented by "M" pronounced as in "sum." This closes the pronunciation of Om just as deep sleep is the final stage of the mind at rest. Whenever Om is recited in succession there is an inevitable period of silence between two successive Oms. This silence represents the "fourth state" known as "Turiya" which is the state of perfect bliss when the individual self recognizes his identity with the supreme.Just as the sound of Om represents the four states of Brahman, the symbol Om written in Sanskrit also represents everything. The material world of the waking state is symbolized by the large lower curve. The deep sleep state is represented by the upper left curve. The dream state, lying between the waking state below and the deep sleep state above, emanates from the confluence of the two. The point and semicircle are separate from the rest and rule the whole. The point represents the turiya state of absolute consciousness. The open semicircle is symbolic of the infinite and the fact that the meaning of the point can not be grasped if one limits oneself to finite thinking.

    1. The chanting of Om drives away all worldly thoughts and removes distraction and infuses new vigour in the body.

    2. When you feel depressed, chant Om fifty times and you will be filled with new vigour and strength. The chanting of Om is a powerful tonic. When you chant Om, you feel you are the pure, all pervading light and consciousness.

    3. Those who chant Om will have a powerful, sweet voice. Whenever you take a stroll, you can chant Om. You can also sing Om in a beautiful way. The rythmic pronunciation of Om makes the mind serene and pointed, and infuses the spiritual qualifications which ensure self-realization.

    4. Those who do meditation of Om daily will get tremendous power. They will have lustre in their eyes and faces.

Retire to a quite place, sit down, close your eyes and completely relax your muscles and nerves. Concentrate on the space between your eyebrows and quieten and silence the conscious mind. Begin to repeat "Om" mentally while associating the ideas of infinity, eternity, immortality, etc. You must repeat Om with the feeling that you are the infinite and all-pervading. Mere repetition of Om will not bring the desired result. Keep the meaning of Om always at heart. Feal Om. Feel that you are the pure, perfect, all-knowing, eternal, free, Brahman. Feel that you are absolute consciousness and the infinite, unchanging existance. Every part of your body should powerfully vibrate with these ideas. This feeling should be kept up all day long. Practice regularly and steadily with sincerity, faith, perseverance and enthusiasm in the morning, midday and evening. There are many mantras used in worship. The first is always the Moola Manthirum. This mantra forms the foundation which supports all the others. It was not written by a person but was given to us directly from Amma Herself in Her oracle. This mantra has enormous power. Some of the benefits conferred by reciting the Moola Mantra are:

    1. The Divine energy freely flows from the feet of Amma to the different systems of the body. The holy vibrations penetrate all the cells and revitalize the entire system.

    2. Eradication of one's Karma.

    3. Gives you what you rightfully deserve.

    4. Helps solve ailments and genuine problems.

    5. Confers blessings leading to prosperity and a happy life.

    6. Helps one to reach the highest spiritual pedestal (Mukti).

    7. Prevents fatal accidents.

    ed.

Om, or Ohm, is the sound of the universe. It is the primal noise, the frequency of totality.

I don't know the phrases you mention, but I thought that "Ohm padme mani om" was the phrase for the Jewel of the lotus, one of the titles of the enlightened one.
