Can a browser fake an operating system?

For example, when I hook up my computer to a network via an ethernet cable, apparently the "network" can identify my operating system. Is there any way to fake an operating system so that the network thinks I'm running say linux when I'm really running windows?

Yes, you would have to modify some browser environmental settings.

Instructions for these would vary for any browser, assuming it allows it at all.

Download Firefox ( www.mozilla.com/products/download.html ) then download the User Agent Switcher add-on ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59/ ). Once downloaded restart then go up to Tools->Default User Agent then pick what operating + browser you want to emulate! :D
