A long time ago I read a book about sheep and shepherds and the significance of Jesus calling himself the shepherd and us the sheep. I can't remember all the things it said. I remember it talking about how if one sheep wanders away from the flock the shepherd will leave all the others and go after that one because it is in danger. So we as Christians are to stay close to Jesus our shepherd to keep us safe. He leads us guides us to the water when we are thirsty and keeps us in the right place to be fed .

I lived on a sheep farm...Sheep are quite stupid, easily led... They are not good at thinking for themselves... For example, sheep that have been frightened/ are in a state of panic have been known to blindly "follow the leader" (even if it is a crazy sheep), and to pile on top of each other, suffocating themselves in the process.. Sheep will also eat poisonous weeds if not protected from them, etc... Sheep will follow a stupid leader off a cliff... Sheep are also extremely reactionary, and prone to panic attacks... Sheep won't come in out of the rain without being encouraged ....Sheep find safety in numbers, and like to be surrounded by their own kind, become stressed out if separated from the herd... Need I go on?

So I find it quite funny that Christians think being called sheep is a good thing... But then if you think turning your life over to a sky daddy to take care of you is a good thing, then I guess the idea of having a good shepherd is comforting...

(And actually a shepherd who will leave a whole flock in danger to retrieve a single lost lamb would not keep his job long/ is acting quit irresponsible...A whole flock of ewes is worth a lot more than one lamb, especially since most ewes have twins or triplets, lessening the impact of one lost lamb...)

Jesus is our shepherd. He keeps his followers, or "sheep" in line, on track, and where they need to be. He never takes his eyes off us. He makes sure we are always provided for, taken care of, and he loves us.

My favorite sheep reference is the story of the lost sheep. Jesus talks about all of his sheep being in place except for one. Even though there was only one sheep, Jesus went out of his way to go and get it and bring it back to him. This really shows that us as individuals matter to Jesus. He cares about each and every one of us.

  • We are like sheep and Jesus is our Shepherd.

We wander around in the field (Earth), at first lost.

We then hear the Shepherd calling us.

We can choose to follow the Shepherd home, or stay lost in the field, and be devoured by the wolves

Sheep get lost easily, as do we.

Wolves are like demons and the devil.

    The Lord is our Shepherd!

Combine that with Jesus calling himself the good shepherd and it has quite a bit of significance. See John Chapter 10.

The answer is in the bible it self.

The answer is this; before Hi call us sheep because the sheep do not know that the shepherd do, it just follow. But now I call you friends because I have show you the plan that MY FATHER has prepare for you.

The bible has a lot of metaphors referencing the Lord as a shepherd and his followers as sheep. When you think about it's it's quite simple:

Jesus is the Lord, therefore a shepherd and people follow him like a flock of sheep.

My dad raised real sheep and as long as they were fed, watered and pampered they would basically follow dad. But if they thought somebody else had something a little better, they would follow them. There are some real sheep that are leaders BUT the majority are followers. GET THE PICTURE !

Christians are gentle like a sheep.

Sheep are protected by and follow a shepherd, Christians are protected by and follow our Shepherd, God, and can receive guidance from other Christians.
