What happens with carry on luggage at international connection in Canada?

When flying from the US round trip to Japan via Canada, do they inspect your carry on baggage and have you go through customs, immigration, or security checks at the airport in Canada? Would the answer vary if you purchased one through ticket online, but were traveling on two different airlines for the two legs?

You will need to go through customs, immigration, security and baggage checkes regardless of what type of ticket you have. This is mandatory at all international airports.

They are authorized to if they feel its warranted. It is the same all over the world. Whenever you enter a country, That country's customs officials are allowed to search any bag they deem necessary. Customs officials don't care whether you are flying with one airline or 40 different airlines. It is a non issue.
