What part does your subconscious play in navigating or influencing your physical life?
In other words, do you consciously navigate your life, or are you sometimes controlled by a force beyond your material awareness?

No. From birth you take in the necessary info for survival. For instance if you don't feel hungry you don't eat but when you do become hungry then you feel hunger pains as they are known which are telling you to eat something and when what you eat hits your stomach you get relief which is your subconscious telling you your no longer hungry for example. The beauty of your subconscious is if you can tap into it you can change your thinking patterns to maintain a positive attitude toward your future life style and make huge achievements simply by focusing in the path of achievement. You could call it creative thinking.
