oil drain plug stuck like a mother....?

So I recently bought one of my childhood dream trucks, a 1985 toyota sr5 4x4 pickup about a week ago and decided to do some small stuff to it so i can get it insured, registered, etc. So today i planned on changing the oil and the plugs. No biggie right? WELL....whoever changed the oil last must have used put the drain plug on like there was no tomorrow. The plug already had most of its edges rounded off so i'm assuming somebody had trouble in the past. Well...i tried a 14mm wrench/socket and nothing. I then decided to run back to autozone (after buying oil and all the other goodies) to buy some vice grips. Tried those and NOTHING!!! the vice grips just dug its teeth into the plug. Either some moron used loc tite on the plug.....or somebody welded it on the damn pan!!!! Tried some wd-40 nothing....tried budging it a bit with a hammer, nothing....a hammer and vice grips, nothing. Tried running the engine for a bit to heat up the oil just a bit....nothing. Anybody got any solutions??? If one of your solutions is to take it somewhere, i cant. Like i said, i just bought this and have to wait a bit to get it registered, etc. I already have a headache from all this, :(

I would use the vice grips and put them on as tight as you can. The plug is already damaged so it doesn't matter how you get it off or how much damage you do to it, you will have to replace it anyway, just remember to not damage the pan. Put a pipe over the end of the vice grip and pull. If that doesn't work try a pipe wrench. You could file or cut two flats on the edge of the nut to get a better grip. Because I weld I would just weld a nut to it and remove it that way, the heat would help loosen the plug. Make sure that you have the new plug and gasket first before you destroy the old one. (Remember clockwise to tighten counter clockwise to loosen.) Good luck!

Tap on it a few times with a hammer on the head of the plug as hard as you can without bending the oil pan Get a pipe wrench and a cheater pipe and pull with every thing you've got.

Just when you think your outta **** , PULL HARDER.

    Replace the plug and gasket.

If it's a crush type gasket it needs replacing each oil change. If reused the drain plug gets tightened harder and harder and this results in stripping out the oil pan threads. O-ring type gaskets/seals can be reused until the rubber o-ring gets hard. The aluminum washer type should be replaced each time.

  • an 85, that should be either a 14 mm or a 19mm, use a 6 point socket to put a firm grasp on it. id bet that i could get it out pretty easily. done it so many times. i do hope that you have a new plug for it before you get this one out.

If the drain plug is a hex bolt then you may be able to use a hacksaw/dremel to cut a notch in it. This will enable you to slot something in to give you some leverage, a bit like a flat-headed screwdriver. Good luck

if your turning the right way i would try 1 more thing before dropping the pan. i would get a big pipe wrench and see if it will come out. they must been afraid it was going to come out. what was they thinking? maybe they thought they were torquing a head.

    Forget about the drain plug.

Get an oil extractor (mityvac) and just use that to suck the oil from the top for oil changes.

Might have to replace the oil pan.
