Google Voice. Privacy?

With Google Voice I was thinking I could give out my Google number to a few people that may need to contact me in emergency's but I don't want them to have my regular phone number.

If I'm understanding this right they can do this without even knowing my state or real phone #. Is this correct?

    Yes.

    I've been using google voice for...about 7 months?

    I texted a few friends but they couldn't figure out who I was.

    I went to meet them and I saw the text and it just said the google voice number and my text.
