I have Beta Thalassemia Minor and I've been taking Folic Acid for a couple of years because I am symptomatic as you are (as recommended by my hematologist). I've found that it helps. Iron shouldn't be taken unless you're being monitored by your MD because of the way people with thalassemia absorb iron. It's absorbed more easily (this is per my MD), and can put you at risk for hemochromatosis. So I'd say Folic Acid is probably a very good start, but definitely see a hematologist about it to make sure your iron levels are not too low. In my case, I have low iron but I'm not anemic.

Just wanted to second Victoria's answer. I also have thal minor and was prescribed folic acid (2mg per day). It definitely impacts my hemoglobin results (initially went from 8 to 10) and makes a difference in how I feel.

Patients with thalassemia minor usually do not require any specific treatment. Treatment for patients with thalassemia major includes chronic blood transfusion therapy, iron chelation, splenectomy, and allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation.
