Strongest engine I could fit in an S-10?

It's a 1994 SS model, and from what I've seen the engine compartment on the SS is slightly smaller than the standard. Currently I have the stock V6 4.3L Vortec, but from what I've read about them it's not going to last that much longer (131k miles). I want the most horsepower I can fit in the compartment without any major modifications. Again, I'm not looking at size, but horsepower.

Just throw out suggestions, I don't need a long speech about anything other than that. I'm aware that there are other ways to increase horsepower other than switching the engine. I'm fairly competent when it comes to cars, so don't worry about telling me anything other than what I'm asking.

Why do you think the engine that's in your truck won't last that much longer? Have you been abusing it or not maintaining it properly? If properly maintained, the GM 4.3 liter V-6 should be good for at least 250K miles.

Of course, nothing lasts forever, and if you're really intent on changing engines, I'd look at the Chevy small block V-8 as a suitable replacement. This is quite a common swap into S-10 pickups and you can easily get more horsepower than your little truck can handle with a well set up Chevy 350.

There is no reason why the 4.3 wont last a whole lot longer. That is also the largest engine that came in the S10 stock.

If you want to put some money into an old truck that isn't worth a whole lot drop a 350 in there. The 4.3 is just a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off. The trans and all that stuff should bolt up pretty easily to the new engine. There is an endless supply of everything you could imagine to make a 350 run however you want.
