My turtle hasn't eaten in a week or so?
I have a 6-year-old Red Eared Slider. I noticed he hadn't been moving much or eating any of his food, so I took him to the vet last week. The vet said he has a respiratory infection, but that he seems pretty strong and healthy otherwise. I've been giving my poor turtle Baytril injections once a day (for 14 days). I've also put him in a completely dry cage (with a dish of water). I have a UV light over the cage. I've made sure to keep the temp in the room a little higher than usual as well. Once a day I put him in his cage with water to see if he'll eat anything, but he never does. What should I do? He's been on Baytril for about a week now. He doesn't seem to have gotten worse, but no improvement either. I feel like he needs to eat to get the proper vitamins to help fight off the illness. When I asked the vet a week ago about my turtle's lack of eating, she just said to wait because eating is a sign of recovery.

Baytril can also decrease appetite. What are your temps? RES need a basking spot of 95F. Measure this with a digital probe thermometer for accuracy. What are your water temps? They need water heaters to keep the water at 78F. The UV light needs to be UVB...use a Reptisun 5.0 and change this bulb every 6-8 months as they lose potency over time. Have you been supplying all of this for the past 6 years? It takes years sometimes for serious health problems to show up. Do you use gravel or other loose substrate? If so, he could be impacted from eating it. An x-ray can confirm this. Do you keep the water crystal clear and clean? Powerful filters are a must. Water still needs to be changed even with a filter as filters do not remove ammonia. Any of these conditions can lead to respiratory infection if not met correctly. Go to austins and check out the health and care section for more info. Here's the link:

You should try putting him in a cooler habitat for better rest.
