Who should know more about illegal immigration: cops in border towns or cops patrolling Phoenix?

Phoenix is over 150 miles from the Arizona/Mexican border yet, cops from Phoenix like Sheriff Joe Arpaio are very vocal about illegal immigration and have conflicting stories when it comes to illegal immigrant crime and border crossing numbers. What they say about illegal immigrant crime is totally different from what cops say that patrol border towns. Most border town authorities say that crime has not gone up and numbers are exaggerated, they don't see all the violence Phoenix cops talk about at the border, and especially the beheadings that turned out to be a lie. So who should we believe when it comes to illegal immigration; cops patrolling border town, or cops 150 miles away with conflicting stories and statistics?

==============================

Violence is not up on Arizona border despite Mexican drug war

NOGALES, Ariz. - Assistant Police Chief Roy Bermudez shakes his head and smiles when he hears politicians and pundits declaring that Mexican cartel violence is overrunning his Arizona border town.

"We have not, thank God, witnessed any spillover violence from Mexico," Bermudez says emphatically. "You can look at the crime stats. I think Nogales, Arizona, is one of the safest places to live in all of America."

While smugglers have become more aggressive in their encounters with authorities, as evidenced by the shooting of a Pinal County deputy on Friday, allegedly by illegal-immigrant drug runners, they do not routinely target residents of border towns.

In Yuma, police spokesman Sgt. Clint Norred said he cannot recall any significant cartel violence in the past several years. Departmental crime records show the amount of bloodshed has remained stable despite a substantial population increase.

Even Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, among the most strident critics of federal enforcement, concedes that notions of cartel mayhem are exaggerated. "We're not seeing the multiple killings, beheadings and shootouts that are going on on the other side," he said.

"I think the border-influenced violence is getting worse," Villasenor said. "But is it a spillover of Mexican cartel members? No, I don't buy that."

Update:

@Darby Crash, Sheriff Babeu is a nice guy? he also patrols a county miles away from the border and he's been on a racist radio show to top it off. So, I doubt he's telling the truth. He has something else on his agenda. Google it!

Violent Crime Is Down in Arizona, Up in Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s County

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s claims about illegal immigrants and violent crime have been pretty thoroughly debunked, but pro-reform non-profit America’s Voice takes it one step further, circulating a graph today indicating that Arizona’s SB 1070 could actually increase crime in the state. The graph shows rates of violent crime in Arizona jurisdictions from 2002 to 2009. Violent crime rates are all down — statewide numbers included — except for in Maricopa County, the jurisdiction of pro-enforcement Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Crime in Arpaio’s county has gone up 58 percent since 2002, according to America’s Voice data.

Border Chief Carlos Carillo seems to have a problem understanding what his job is. He needs to be fired. Tancredo is correct. We should not have a person, as head of the U.S. Border Patrol, who does not have a clue as to what exactly the U.S. Border Patrol is. >> "The United States Department of Homeland Security, through the Directorate of Border and Transportation Security, has responsibility for securing our nation's borders. The Directorate of Border and Transportation Security -- or BTS -- also assumed the responsibility for enforcing our immigration laws through the creation of a new border enforcement agency. During the creation of the new Department of Homeland Security, the U.S Border Patrol, along with the legacy-INS inspection division, the legacy-U.S. Customs inspection division, and the Department of Agriculture’s plant and animal inspection service were merged into a new agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, also known as CBP. While the traditional mission of the Border Patrol has always been the detection and prevention of the illegal entry of aliens and smuggling of illegal contraband into the United States anywhere other than a designated port-of-entry, the dawn of the age of terrorism within our nation added a new priority mission: to detect and prevent the entry of terrorists and their weapons into the United States. The Border Patrol never sleeps. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol are doing everything possible with the resources available to them to secure the borders of the United States of America against the unknown. Keeping America’s borders safe is a very dangerous assignment. More than 90 Border Patrol officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. Thousands have been wounded. The Border Patrol’s mission has increased over the years. Today, the Border Patrol must also operate within the interior of United States — monitoring roads and even some airports where illegal aliens concentrate. In addition, other government agencies have granted the Border Patrol certain additional powers. " Just because the Border Patrol now has added duty of "detect and prevent terrorist entry" does NOT mean that all the OTHER duties are thrown out with the dirty bathwater. What is Carillos problem? He can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Someone who is able to handle the ENTIRE job needs to be head of the US Border Patrol. Did Carrillo even graduate from high school?

Both. When illegals come, they don't usually reside in the border towns, they move and live in Phoenix! Any and every state has to worry about the violence that comes from illegals. I believe Joe. Certainly not you toni with your bogus links and 50 different identities. Like I said, your calling obama a liar, he has told Americans the border was not safe. So your debunking yourself.

Logically it would be Phoenix! That's where they stop and start committing their crimes! Do you really expect us to believe that the minute an illegal alien crosses the border he starts committing his crimes? NO! They wait until they find some place to crash first! In small towns they would find it hard to blend in! Commit a crime in a small town and your easily a suspect. It's a lot harder to find a criminal in a city of 1.6 million. Think about it! Which is easier to hide in? Nogales, AZ with a population of less than 20,000 (largest border town in AZ) or Phoenix with a population of over 1.6 million?

If you would do a follow up on that Bermudez dude youd find his talking points are BS.

Phoenix is the largest city in AZ, hence we get the brunt of immigrants before they disperse elsewhere. The border towns, most just pass through to come here (and tucson).

Phoenix cops didnt bring up the beheadings, Stupid Jan Brewer did.

Look up sherriff Babeu. hes a border sherriff that says the complete opposite of your link. And he's a super nice guy, unlike Arpaio.

You should believe the citizens that live through this crap every day. I cant go to Home Depot in my boyfriends pick up without getting surrounded, i cant get a job on the west side beause i dont speak spanish, my identity has been stolen 3 times to fund hospital bills for anchor babies, and my boyfriends been laid off 3 times to be replaced with illegal labor. Our schools are broke since spanish only kids tank our testing and make us loose fed. funding, our city, jails, and hospitals are over crowded, our insurance rates are thru the roof due to uninsured/ unlicensed drivers, all of these serious problems and i didnt even get into the violence and drop houses and robberies.

Edit; i live here, i dont have to google it.

Border Town cops of coarse. Sheriff Joe is under investigation for lying and abusing his power. The whole border violence spilling over is just a political ploy and is now backfiring on the Governor.

I live in Phoenix, and there is not all that violence they talk about. I actually go for jogs late at night in South Phoenix.

Cops patrolling those border towns. Joe Arpaio is only worried about taking down the hard working people and not the drug dealers, smugglers or cartels.

Joe Arpaio's immigration sweeps are UNCLEAR! Some places even saw a rise in crime after he conducted one of his sweeps. Hmmm!

    http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/10/04/...

Impact of Arpaio's crime sweeps is unclear

The impact of the sweeps on crime is less clear. The sheriff's goal for the sweeps is to improve public safety and suppress crime, plus drive out illegal immigrants.

In neighborhoods of north and east Phoenix, data show that total violent crimes rose after deputies conducted saturation raids. In Fountain Hills, sheriff's statistics show deputies dealt with more major crimes this June than they did in June 2007, yet fewer overall crimes.

Police and Sheriffs near the border have a better idea of the problems at the border. Police and Sheriffs who work in and around big cities have a better idea of the problems presented by illegals who get past the border. Anyone who thinks immigration problems exist only at the border is just fooling themselves
