What is a Lash back adjustment?

Hi i'm looking at buying an 84 camaro. It has a new motor and transmission.

The only thing the guy says is wrong with it is that "Need a lash back adjustment in the rear"

What does that mean and about how much would it cost at a shop if i got it done, or can i do it myself. I need to know soon so that i can negotiate price.

    has to do with ring and pinion clearances in the rear end differential.

    this is for a merc. not yours, but it's a good example. as i have no idea what power plant or rear end you have. a few options there.

    this is a quote from the link,

    "When installing a ring and pinion, you have to have a perfect installation or else you are going to destroy the gears and bearings."

    the way you word it, makes me think tey aren't telling you the whole truth.

    my thoughts are;

    if the ring/pinion or cluster was replaced, then he didn't finish the job. no one would omit setting backlash.

    so,if nothing has been replaced, then it's likely on it's way out and needs an inspection to determine what needs attention.

    it's prolly a ten bolt and not worth the effort. they will break if hard pressed by the v8 routinely on saturday nights. if it's a 12 bolt, forget it. that's the best gm has and your likely gonna want to set up a ferd 9 in there. that will mean extra fabbing and some donor parts special axles. address brake unit compatibilities. cuz ya can't just bolt 'em up.

    12 bolts can get quite pricey to beef up, and they still won't be as strong as a ferd 9.

    none of this is a job for the beginner, let alone a novice.

    i blew my first diff set up. bowl of soup it was. blender.

    if your right foot is like theirs, then your gonna need to make a decision as to which way you go with the rear as a whole before you buy.

    if your gonna just putt around, give it to a shop. the estimate would be determined by what's still serviceable in there. ring and pinions need to be replace as a matched set. pumpkins can be had. 5-6-7 hundred maybe. as a shop will mark up everything. that's not even shop time.

    just fishy i tell ya! good luck!

    it extremely is confusing to discover 0 clearance whilst the lifters are no longer pumped up. it particularly is how I extremely have continuously lashed small block chevys, in spite of the reality that it could get messy. do away with a million valve disguise, start up engine. Tighten the 1st rocker nut till the push rod stops spinning under the rocker. Then lower back off a million/4-a million/2 turn. Repeat for all of the others. This works nicely with new valve prepare aspects as nicely as nicely used areas. the downside is oil would drip on warm headers.
