What are your school hours?

Our schools this year extended their hours. Our children are in school 8am-4pm, which I think is crazy. My second grader actually gets out at 3:45, but the effect is the same. 8 hours at school with only a 30 minute lunch break. They do have PE every day, but no recess.

How can they even justify that? My daughter is a good student and is in the gifted and talented program, but she is bored out of her mind and I find that I'm having to talk her into going to class every day.

I want to raise concerns with the school board at the next meeting, but I'd like more info from other schools and communities.

How long is your school? grade school, middle school, high school? recess?

Personally I feel like they are making a big mistake in basically mandating tax-funded babysitting service.

Your kids must be worn out by the end of the day! Our South Louisiana elementary school's hours are 7:55 a.m. to 2:55 p.m., with two recess breaks, an extremely short lunch break, and P.E. My kids don't seem to mind the hours all that much, but they do attend after care until about 5:00 p.m., so it is a rather long day for them after all.

Is your school going to four days a week with those extended hours? It seems like more and more school systems are experimenting with longer hours, with varying success.

Hey I'm 15 going to be 16 in a couple of month. So I'm in high school year 11 UK, after reading how long the school days are for you kids I'm happy about mine.

Well we have registration for 15 minutes in the morning so we start registation at 8:45. At 9-11 we have two lessons each lesson is about an hour and then we have a 15 minut break, this is then followed by two more lessons from 11:15-13:15 and we have lunch for 45 minutes. After are lunch break we have one final lesson for an hour and have an afternoon registration at 15:00 and get to go home at 3:10. So all in all we have five lessons if a duration of an hour each, two breaks adding up to an hour and two registrations which is all together 25 minutes. So my school day is in total 6 hours and 25 minutes. :) hope that answers your question

Well, a few years ago i was in elementary school, which was from 9-3:45 (around that time)

    It's 6 1/2 hours.

MIddle school and high school is also 6 1/2 hours.

Middle school is from 8-2:45 (it's all around 6 1/2 hours)

High school is same as middle school.

In elem., we had like, a 25 minute lunch, with a 15 or 10 minute recess (I forget).

In middle school, we have a 30 minute lunch with a 15 minute reading time, we get no recess.

    That's crazy!

I'm in 11th grade, and I have school from 9:10 to 3:10, with a 15 minute break and a 45 minute lunch break.

My sister in 4th grade has school from 8:25 until 2:50, with an hour lunch break and a 15 minute recess.

Your kids are spending way too much time at school, in my opinion. Eight hours is way too much, especially for kids who are that young. 7 & 1/2 hours is too long, my sister and I only spend about six hours in school, including breaks, and we both do really well.

Do they go to school less days of the year in exchange for a longer day? The biggest problem I see is she's not being challenged and having 8 hours of not being challenged is a drag! Have you thought of pulling her out for homeschooling, or is your situation such that that wouldn't work? The actual amount of time needed to teach subjects is much less, when one on one, than they take in the school. Plus if there is a misunderstanding, or you see you daughter can go much faster, you can accommodate that too!

Have you thought of having her tested in the individual subjects and see if she could move to a more appropriate level for each one. You could grade skip too, but I found with my son that selective skipping put him in just the classes he needed at the level he needed them. They still moved too slowly, because he was able to understand things much faster than other students, but at least he wasn't reading "See Dick run." when he could read "Jurassic Park."

Just thoughts. It's tough dealing with public and even private schools, who have their minds made up as to what is to take place for each student regardless of individual differences. It's no good for any student, actually.

I'll give you a link to a gifted website I used extensively raising my son and to an article that illustrates rather nicely why gifted kids need to have different education than the general population.

    Good luck!
