What are some authentic/non-touristy NYC bars and clubs?

I'm going to NYC with a friend this Ocotber and would like to go to real New York bars and clubs, not the tourist traps. Any ideas? We will be staying in East Village, but anything that's not too far from Manhattan will do.

Also the music we'll be looking for will be R&B and rock music (we have very different tastes :-))

    Rudy's on Ninth Ave and 45th street.

    I do agree with the first poster. It is more of a relaxed place. It is more like a "Mom & Pop" place than those commercial establishments.
