Which Broadway show should I see?

My husband and I are going to New YOrk City this weekend and we want to see a broadway show. I read a lot of reviews and I am torn between Next to Normal and Billy Elliott. Has anyone seen both and which would they recommend?

I've heard so many good things about "Billy Elliott"! I'd recommend that one over "Next To Normal".

I have seen both on Broadway, and it really depends on what type of show you like. Billy Elliot is a traditional Broadway musical, with a huge cast, big dance numbers, complex set, and "musical theatre" sounding songs - it's a feel good musical, even if the end is a little sad. Next to Normal doesn't fall into that category. It's a modern musical with a six person cast and almost nothing choreographed. The subject matter is very dark and the songs sound more modern and while the actors I saw were amazing singers, they emphasize was really on the acting and not singing or the music. Both are very well done, though I personally liked Next to Normal better, but Billy Elliot is more of what you'd expect from a Broadway musical. It's a huge, fun production while Next to Normal is more like seeing an intense play with some good songs. Ultimately, it's what you'll like better

I Don't know much about those, but I can recommend a few others. 'The Phantom of the Opera' is always a classic. The first time a saw it, I was amazed! If your wanting something a little lighter 'Wicked' has great music, and spectacular sets; a very good option. 'Mary Poppins' or 'The Lion King' is also a good choice. Although these may seem like 'kid shows' they're actually highly entertaining and heartwarming. I hoped this help and I hope you have a wonderful time in NYC!

Yes, "Next to Normal" is a downer. Great acting, but not a traditional Broadway musical.

"Billy Elliott" is great, but very popular. Tickets are hard to come by.

The Off-Broadway musical "Million Dollar Quartet" is being marketed as "Wife-Tested and

Husband Approved". It might be a good choice.

I've seen both of them and, to me, Next to Normal was a real downer and brought back some unpleasant childhood memories.. but if seeing something about mental illness is your thing.. go for it. Billy Elliot is a serious musical, but the music is great.
