You must always ask the bus driver for the help and what the guidelines are for your area...

just keep doing what you are doing there is no set slot it all depends on how soon the person before got off the bus .and pulled his/her bike out leaving whatever slot empty. I see no problem moving bikes around as long as you don't damage it, for all you know ,you will be removing your bike first leaving an empty slot in front ,the world has has much larger problems, nice to see you are doing something to save it ;)

I would get pissed if somebody moved my bike w/o asking my permission first.

While moving my pedals so that it doesn't damage your spokes is OK moving my bike is not.

The way that you do the first slot is that you put your rear tire in the slot that is closest to the curb and then lift your bike by the stem under your handle bars and back your bike in.

you can always ask the driver to help you.. i see it all the time where drivers help people put their bikes on.. im in toronto tho.. i dont know where you are..

all i can say is i would have no clue on how to get my bike on one of the racks so i would definetely need the help.
