Almost every Nation who claims to be "Democratic" are in point of fact NOT!
Take the United States of America for one example.
Sure,...the People go out and vote for a "New" President every four years,...seems fine and dandy so far, but when we consider the FACT that Obama (Dem) and McCain or Bush for that matter (Rep),....when we consider the FACT that all of these guys actually "work" for the Bankers and serve "Their" interests instead of the interests of the American People,...does it really matter "Who" or "what" Party wins the election?
It's all a charade,....a con,....a soap opera even!
Think of "freedom of choice",...in many ways this is what "Democracy" is all about, Freedom to choose (vote) for the Candidate (party) you yourself decided of your own free will to choose,..or vote for.
Now,..lets take a look again, only this time, lets place ourselves in a sweet shop or candy store.
Bear with me here,.....
So, you go into the sweet shop to "choose" the sweet you want of your own free will.
You have freedom of choice,....yes.....no-one is forcing you to choose this piece of candy as opposed to another piece of candy,....YOU CHOOSE (you vote).
BUT!
And it's a big but.
"WHO" decided what candy was on the shelves?
Was it you?
Of course it wasn't,....it was the "owner" of the candy store who "chose" which sweets were to be made available to you.
Your "freedom of choice" has now been limited.
You might have freedom of choice still,...yes,....but you can only choose something the owner of the store has decided on.
There you have American Democracy in a nutshell.
All the candidates have been "chosen" by the "Store" owner,...and you the voter can only chose one of them.
Do you think the store owner gives a damn who you vote for?
Of course he doesn't,..because no matter "who" you vote for,....the President will do as his owner tells him.
For "owner",...see Bankers

First let me point out that the United States is a Republic and not a Democracy. In a Republic such as ours all people have rights. In a Democracy the Majority rules. So if the Majority of the people want to deprive a group of people from enjoying their freedom of religion, or citizenship they can. In a Constitutional Republic, they cannot.
The Democratic Republic of Vietnam is actually a democracy. The majority of people agree with their government, usually in fear. The Republic of China is actually a Democracy, not a Republic. There are many differing countries who have a combination of these.
The United States had the Democrats who supported Segregation, were members of the KKK, which hated Afro-Americans, Catholics and Jewish people.

Democracy-: Goverment of the people, for the people, by the people. Therefore clearly there is no country in the world that can claim to be a democracy. Britain as an example, two major parties that persue their own agendas, issue manifestos based on those agendas. When they achieve government they then proceed to do what they like and the manifestos are forgotten. Once in power there is no force in the country that monitors their activities to make sure that they dont go beyond the bound of their manifesto. Strictly speaking they are cartels that persue their own interests to the detriment of all else. And like cartels politcal parties should be declared illegal.

In the 1970s, if a country called itself "The Democratic Republic of ..." it meant it was a Communist dictatorship. In the UK, we have a system of democracy where the people get a say in a loaded lottery of who will be the dictator for the next 5 years.

Democracy is simply a system where the individual people have a say in how the government is run. This is pretty broad, so I am sure there are many ways to implement it. For example, in the U.S. we have a Republic, which means that the people elect officials to represent them. They do not have a direct say, but otherwise vote for an official who shares their views. This is a specific implementation of democracy, and I am sure there are many more.

The sphere of governance in any organized human endeavour is the art of associating, and that skill of associating is based on the bottom up approach rather than the top down diarchy structure to self-government in the real world,
because when people are capable of governing themselves in their own towns and villages, in their chosen universities or professional associations, they are more likely to succeed in doing so at a national level.
Whenever the accomplishment of democracy is achieved at the barrow of a gun, then the only human rights left for the Iraqis or Afghans is suicide bombing.
The violence staining the streets of Kabul or Baghdad with gore is a classic symptom of any appointed governance, totally incompatible with any sphere of organized human endeavour.

"Democracy" is a word that encompasses a wide variety of political variations, yes; on its own, all the word means is "government derived from the people".
