It doesn't necessarily have a mind of its own, it just has a direct line to the part of your mind that you can't control. Think of it as manual over ride. Testicles need a certain temperature range to produce and function properly, and that temperature is somewhat cooler than our average body temp (around 98.6) So when the boys get colder, they retract, pulling up closer to the body, and when they're hotter, they drop like a rock so to speak to regulate temperature. It's one of the ways out body takes care of its needs so we don't have to.
