Is English is understood in south American countries?

I wish to visit Ecuador and neighboring countries to see new places and explore possibilities to immigrate do some business to earn leaving. I have short listed some countries like Ecuador, Peru Chile and others. I am learning Spanish currently. But to be on the safer side want to know if English is widely understood. Is English welcome by the locals there or you have to know Spanish 100%? If possible tell me on all the South American countries you know, people from world visit as tourist or for permanent settlement?

English is taught in schools, but most do not speak it fluently. Those who work in the tourist industry usually have a better grasp than others. I would not depend on them speaking English; it is not widely understood. I've lived in Ecuador for many years and only run across a handful of Ecuadorians that speak good English. That said, the people are very patient and accommodating with those learning to speak Spanish. And if needed you would be able to find yourself a good translator to work with you.

I particularly don't know Spanish, except for maybe a few words. I was not well when I was a child, and needed a special class to help me keep up, so I wasn't taught a language. My belief is that most people are accepting if approached and you don't know their language. They will try to understand you. I would. If someone who I didn't understand approached me, I would try to help them regardless whether or not I understood them. Hope this helps.

English is a universal language. There's bound to be someone that at least understands a little English in most countries...but it wouldn't hurt to attempt to learn the local language.
