Son in USAF Basic Training, needs advice.?

My son is in basic training in Texas. He's 6'5 and very thin (220lbs). He's having trouble increasing his sit-up and push-up speed and is concerned he will not pass basic in 8 weeks because of that. His stamina has increased and he is able to do the runs without stopping now, but says no matter how hard he tries he can't get his sit-ups and push-ups per minute any faster. He's entering his third week of training, and says he's even tried to lose weight because he thinks that might be holding him back. I don't think he can afford to lose any more weight, though I haven't mentioned that. What words of encouragement and advice can I write to him? Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

The Air Force likes people to graduate basic and go out and help. He should not lose weight, you are right, and he should be sure he is eating well and hydrating properly since those could stop him.

Maybe his height is increasing the leverage needed and slowing him down. But my guess is that his TI is going to find a way for him to pass the tests. When I was in basic we had a kid who had bad ankles, banged up from basic mostly, and he couldn't do his pushups. He got sent for a "retest" in which they put his feet up against the wall to give him better leverage. He passed easily.

He's in week three. I couldn't even do three push ups when I started, but I got a lot better over time. He will likely improve over the next month. If not, he will repeat a portion of the training another time, or even two more times. By that time, he'll pass the PT test. He'll be okay. Just keep encouraging him.

damn if he's thin, I must be anorexic cause I'm 6' and 150lbs haha

I am sure he will pass, 8 weeks is a long time. Just tell him to work hard and be patient.

I dont know what Kavekarst is talking about. I really like the Wal Mart idea and I suggest giving the best answer to the person who mentioned it first.

Eat more. He needs the proteins and electrolytes. He can't do more all of a sudden. He also will not fail because he can't do the required.

    He'll be fine.

The only way to get better at situps/pushups is to do more of them.

Tell him to do extra after lights out.

Eat more calories, it will give him energy. Focus on the proteins- those help build muscles.
