1: Convert all the fractions to the same terms.
2: Add and subtract as necessary.
To work out the first problem for you (the other two solutions are similar):
At closing time , the bakery has 2 and 1/4 apple pies and 1 and 1/2 cherry pies left. How much more apple pie than cherry pie was left ?
2 1/4 apple pies = 9/4 apple pies
1 1/2 cherry pies = 3/2 (multiply by 2/2 to convert) = 6/4 cherry pies
9/4 - 6/4 = 3/4 of a pie more apple pie than cherry pie.

with the first question, you will need to make the denominator of both ammounts the same
there are 4 quaters in a whole, 2 wholes and a quater are the same as 9 quaters
there are two halves in a whole, so 1 whole and a half is the same as 3 halves
so now you have 9 quaters and 3 halves
so this is 9/4 + 3/2
if you make the halves into quaters, you times the denominator of 3/2 by 2, to make the denominator a quater, but what you do to the bottom you MUST do to the top, so times 3 by 2, and you have 6/4 of cherry pies
now take away 6/4 from 9/4
9/4 - 6/4 = 3/4
use this method to help you with the other two
the main trick is to make the denominators the same, but remember what you do to the bottom you must do to the top
hope this helps, it IS confusing when its written down, but simple when you get the hang of it
