My friend thought a dog was choking. She stuck her hand down it's mouth to help. Turned out dog has rabies?

The dog did not bite her but I know it is transmitted in saliva. What should she do. Also, she is pregnant.

Do you really need to ask on this one?

you cannot be sure the dog had rabies unless it was tested which mean it would now be dead.

she needs to see a doctor without a doubt, yahoo answers is more like a "i pick the answer i want not the answer i really need" type of source so a real doctor is the best bet. also, the dog can transmit rabies through saliva but the saliva would need to have entered the bloodstream, so this means the dog would have had to bite her and break the skin. either that or it could possibly pass into an open wound.

If she suspects the dog may have rabies she needs to get to a doctor immediately. She needs to call the OB or midwife overseeing her pregnancy and discuss immunoglobulin injections. If the dog is indeed rabid she may very well have contracted the virus. If she did, then without prompt treatment she will die. Once symptoms manifest treatment is too late. Once symptoms begin to show the diagnosis is terminal.

The animal must be tested for rabies immediately. If the animal cannot be found then she needs to be treated immediately.

How do you know it has rabies? Was it's head sent off to be checked for it, because that is the only way to know. Also, your friend is not very bright. If I even thought that a dog that I had been around had rabies, I would RUN to a hospital for anti-rabies shots, pregnant or not.

    By the way,I think you're a troll.

  • Seeing as how the test for rabies involves dissecting and looking at the brain...I'm doubting the dog is still living. If a veterinarian finds rabies, then they are required to report it. Certainly the health officials would tell the pregnant owner of the dog what to do.

    Not buying it. Sorry.

Go to the doctor ASAP they will advise her what she will need to do. Chances are they will still need to treat her with shots but they will have to take into affect the unborn fetus but without the shots she WILL get rabies and die so they will need to advise her. Do not let her ignore this because both her baby and self are in danger.

If the dog has already been tested for Rabies (that means it died/euthanized and its brain was tested-the only way to test) and the test results are back, then if your "friend" contracted Rabies it is too late for her and her unborn child.

    Suspected rabies needs immediate treatment.

It is great she is having you check on YA rather then seeking medical advice.

I suggest she gets her life in order, make sure she has a will, etc.

Obviously, she needs to see the doctor and the dog needs to go to the vet.

Nah ! ! This never happened. If this was a factual event your friend would have already been told what to do and would be under medical care. PWNED ! !

Sorry - I'm on meds, not stupid.

I would call the hospital & ask questions & go to the ER ASAP!!! Don't take any chances.
